Just my opinion and only with the second verse. I can go too many ways with the first verse, but I do think he is comparing two different situations. This is just my take on what the second verse could be. Try reading the second verse as if you were Judas. Imaginary friends / disciples. And see the evil angel as Jesus. In the end, I think h3 is saying Judas was angry that Jesus surrendered and didn't come in on a war horse. Fly over me evil angel. It's everywhere |

Clarification, my take on the STORY in the song. Its based on Lonnie Yongue, a roomate of Fagens @ Bard College. Becker wrote the verse, Fagen wrote the chorus. But Fagen mentions in "Reelin in the Years" that Lonnie was the king of Potter dorm. They were there in 1965. |

Just my take. The narrator and Lonnie are the same guy. It throws you off because when he is speaking about Lonnie, he's referring to himself in the 3rd person. Listening to it from that perspective makes the song flow in a pretty linear fasion for the most part. Also, the narrator and the girl are not geographically together in the beginning, I think he's trying to call her and it's busy. Like reaching out for help. "I was outta my mind and you were on the phone." She probably played a part in reforming him from his old ways ("You were Lady Bayside...", slang for a goody goody in Bayside). The chorus, not sure, other than it's what the narrator is singing when Lonnie "emerges". Almost has a schizo vibe. The Boston Rag was a newspaper, he may be saying bring back that time, when Lonnie was around. Basically, he's trying to fight off this urge in the beginning, fails, has a binge, then comes back around 48 hours later. Probably without a girlfriend anymore. DAS |
