St. Vincent – Surgeon Lyrics 11 years ago
Actually... It's:

I spent the summer on my back [in bed, because she's depressed]
Another attack [she used to suffer from panic attacks which can cause depression]
Stay in just to get along, get along, get along

Turn off the TV, wade in bed
A blue and a red [as in pills]
A little something to get along, get along, get along
Get along, get along, get along

Best, finest surgeon [taken from Marilyn Monroe's journal]
Come cut me open
Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open [these lines, to me, mean she's wanting someone to help her, if only they could cut her open, look inside and find the problem that needs fixing]

Dressing, undressing for a wall [getting dressed only to stay inside and get undressed again]
If mother calls,
She knows well we don't get along, get along, get along

I tell the mailman, "Never you mind,
I'll sift through the piles"
And for him to just get along, get along, get along
Get along, get along, get along

Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open
Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open

Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open
Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open

Best , finest surgeon
Come cut me open
Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open

Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open
Best, finest surgeon
Come cut me open

St. Vincent – Psychopath Lyrics 11 years ago
Seems to be about a long distance relationship with the other person trying to convince her that distance will make them stronger. But it's only making her psychotic. I think Annie has said this is about a friend she once dated... So, it seems that she's not over the person (keep me in your soft sides=remember me once all the rest have gone).

My heart breaks every time I listen to this. So good. I wish she still did acoustic stuff sometimes...and didn't completely eschew the instrument now (she says she doesn't own a single acoustic out of the 20+/- guitars that she owns.... (?!?)).

The writing credits include her mother which leads me to believe this is a personal story involving family. I do know there was a major event that happened around that time involving a family member and I'm fairly certain part of this, if not all of it, is about him.

St. Vincent – Your Lips Are Red Lyrics 11 years ago
It's about murder. Per St. Vincent/Annie Clark: “I was inspired by this track off Abattoir Blues as I was arranging Your Lips Are Red: how the story unfolds and how there’s so much tension, with those scratchy guitars and those drums coming in to accent the words at various spots. Your Lips Are Red was my stab — no pun intended — at a murder ballad. And, of course, who writes a better murder ballad than Nick Cave?”

I think, as some others have said, that it is about another woman. I think the first "your lips are red" is literally because the woman is wearing red lipstick ...she's watching her say whatever it is that causes her to fly into a rage. Much like "the party", where she adds something about being distracted by a hole in their shirt, it's something that she is fixated on in that moment, a small detail that one might recall later on when thinking back on it.

Ashes in downtown could refer to the wake of destruction caused by their tumultuous relationship; downtown being where she lives.

I'm still not sure what the number two pencil is about unless it has something to do with her hiding her rage behind a fake expression...

Your skin's so fair: literally her skin is fair because she is dead. At the same time, because she sometimes has double meaning in her lyrics, this could be a sudden, albeit too late, change of heart, where she is seeing her in a different light now that the damage is done and there's no longer anything provocative coming from the dead woman's mouth. It's not fair that she's been provoked into this ending.

It's not about the drug. She hasn't heard of it until she googled it after the fact. She used the word because she thought her Lithuanian bandmate would get a kick out of it.

She's a fucking genius when it comes to pulling unexpected, crazy random mixed emotions out of you. A musical sadist lol

I don't get the number 2 pencil thing. I mean I can gather some symbolism if I reach far enough lol but what's your take?

It's likely about her friendship with Alan Del Rio Ortiz. He must have helped her through some low times

St. Vincent – Just the Same But Brand New Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is about an attraction to a woman (based on the perfumed line) that either gave mixed signals or it was unrequited. When they no longer spoke she tried to get over her but never could. And maybe the next time she saw her, the other woman didn't acknowledge their past together, pretending to just be an old friend.

Edit: Annie Clark said this song is about obsession and wanting to know everything about a person and wanting to love the same things they do.

St. Vincent – Severed Crossed Fingers Lyrics 11 years ago
PS you're also correct with the meaning. I just read in an interview with Annie Clark that this song was inspired by a line from a book she was reading. There was a plane crash and the character found a set of "severed crossed fingers in the rubble", to her a symbol of humanity's ability to retain hope even in the most utterly hopeless of situations.

St. Vincent – The Apocalypse Song Lyrics 11 years ago
It seems like she is talking about the repressive nature of religion (she was raised Catholic mostly) in regards to sexuality but more specifically the kind that is not hetero. She is supposedly gay so this would make the most sense.

You wake with stitches over both your eyes [...] and deny me my body and all earthly delights: you're blind to reality (science) and try to repress my natural desires (attraction to/sex with women)

It's time, you are light. Time is something we manufactured...we however are light, something natural. (It's time to wake up)

And yeah, give me little death is a direct translation of the French word for orgasm (le petit mort) which could either be literal (as she's claimed is her typical writing style) which would imply this song is speaking to a specific person (which makes me think the person is for whatever reason withholding sex) or it could be in general. Allow me to have an orgasm with whomever and whenever I want without being judged.

I guess you're afraid of what everyone is made of: Obvious. Religious fanatics are driven by fear which makes them appear to be afraid of human nature.

The rest is also pretty obvious I think.

Someone she can't reel in. Bring me your loves all your loves, I wanna love them too: I want to know what you love, I want to know you more, I want to share a life with you. I thought you were like a dog but you made a pet of me: she thought they would be an easy catch or maybe gave her the impression they wanted her but instead she ended up being the one following them like a puppy. I took you off your leash but I can't make you heel: I gave you your freedom but you won't commit.

Or it could totally be about bdsm and a polyamourous relationship lol

St. Vincent – Severed Crossed Fingers Lyrics 11 years ago
I feel like this is a deeply personal song. I could be wrong . . . but it's beautiful.

First stanza i think is clearly talking about a "certain" musician who's getting older and in the industry that's a curse. Fearing youth because they're the judges. But is supportive even though her optimism isn't mutually felt by the other.

Regardless she's in love but feels like she isn't getting through. Found herself with crossed fingers in the rubble (the crossing of fingers can mean you're hoping for something or it can mean you're telling a lie...think it's the former): she still held out hope among the destructiveness of the other person's outlook (or among the negativity that the media/critics/youth suffocates them with -spitting out their guts through their gears, draiming our spleens through the years?). Severed crossed fingers=lost/losing hope?

I'm probably not even close but that's my interpretation.
