Hmm, Good song! My spin on it is that Bowie is talking British Colonialism. He ("I") is playing the part of a more modern Royal. He (probably in a dream) meets a 'ghost' of an ancestor on the stairs and they talk of the old days (when he was not) but he is surprised by his inheritance of the Empire builder 'friendship' title. Anyway, nobody is responsible for the decline because they all died alone a long, long time ago! Or you can just read what he said about the song and believe that. It makes a lot of sense with his relationship to Ziggy. (-: |
