I think the song is about the persons partner being negative and/or radical about their beliefs. I think the person he is talking to is hateful and thinks others should believe what they believe and do what they do and the person speaking is just so tired of all the hate that their loved one is spewing forth. It could also potentially be about verbal abuse of course. His heart is hurting from what is happening and he can't stop it so instead he is trying to ignore whats being said. I think when he says he "won't count the hours rather be a coward" means hes not going to face facts and realize he has to put a stop to the unhealthy situation, instead he is going to run away from the problem by blocking it out. |

this song makes sense to anyone who's ever been in a boring loveless relationship. I was once in such a relationship for about 5 months before coming to my senses and while I never thought of cheating as this song suggests the subject does, I understand the feeling of being an animal trapped in a cage, simply being used for sex like one uses a coffee machine for beverages. She feels the need to escape and be with someone more passionate who appreciates her wild side. |

I feel like this song is about the hypocrisy of religion. She speaks about how the christian god has done horrible things and yet he punishes humans for doing things that he doesn't like. He is supposedly all powerful and yet still lets people suffer and starve. It doesn't necessarily mean she's an atheist, but she seems to be against at least a certain interpretation of god, perhaps the most brutal old testament version. |

I think it's about someone who lost their girlfriend/wife/lover because he took her for granted. He thought she needed him so he didn't have to try to be what she wanted and he changed from the man she fell in love with. She finally has had enough and he doesn't really believe at first that she could have stopped needing. She's upset about the breakup but she's not really crying for him. Now that she is not with him anymore she takes her time and enjoys life while he stays in and becomes depressed and in the end he realizes it was him who needed her all along |

I think the song is about two subjects who live their life in loneliness but who have hope and live as if company is right around the corner (for example, eleanor putting on nice makeup and father mackenzie making his clothes nice and preparing sermons) In the end eleanor dies, still unmarried and with her maiden name. I think there is supposed to be a sort of dark irony to it, that these two lonely souls should only cross each others path when one has died. I think its speaking about how with so many lonely people in the world its a shame that they can't manage to find each other and fill a void in each others lives. |

@[katellow:10139] to me, it's a metaphor for the way they act towards each other. A dance is an art with steps and moves... their love and behavior towards each other is like a dance... calculated and almost artful in its unfortunate complexity. |

This song is obviously about a couple that has split up but I think it has such deeper meaning and more layers than most "lost love" songs do.
In the first verse I think she is telling herself not to look back. "raising my glass to the head of the class" makes me think that shes trying to be friendly towards and cheer on her lovers new girlfriend while quietly drinking to become numb against the pain. She is realizing she hates him for what has happened but she can't help but still feel love.
In the second verse I think she is reminiscing about why their relationship was unhealthy. She knew he was a liar and yet she tried to make it out to be okay. She's regretting ever meeting him and spending their first night together. She says she does not need a balloon and a pin because she feels she is perfectly capable of creating chaos for herself and "bursting her own bubble" about their relationship. They both want to shove the blame on the other person and yet they still want to maintain a friendship even though it's not really what she wants... she still wants his love.
in the chorus shes grieving and wondering why they can't just be together when that's what she yearns for.
At the end she is essentially telling herself she needs to get over it. They each have their own lives now and they need to learn to let each other go. She is finally releasing him but she feels that their love is strong enough that they can care for each other even without being together.
Back into the chorus we see that she is clearly not as over it as she tries to seem but she finishes with "amen" which translates to "Let it be"... this shows a sad, but true acceptance of the situation |

I'm not totally sure what this song is about other than an old detetive show but I just realized the double meaning of "it only took my little fingers to blow you away".
At first I thought the phrase was purely sexual but it could also totally be referring to him luring a girl into staying at his house and then shooting her, as in using your "little fingers" to squeeze the trigger and blow her head off.
Ah costello... so good with sex and violence |

@[picturesofthesun:10138] I just posted but like I said, I think "shoe full of rice" refers to a wedding where in some traditions people throw rice afterwards. He's probably saying that due to the tough situation of getting an abortion they broke up and never had a future and married |

The song is pretty self explanatory.
"stopped a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice" To me it sounds like they got an abortion. A shoe full of rice could refer to the wedding they never had (as in throwing rice in celebration after a wedding) basically I think hes saying they threw away their chance to have kids and get married.
In the second verse the guys girlfriend clearly killed herself and he's remembering how he didn't grieve when they broke up.
To me it's interesting that they speak of feeling so guilty and crying but they still insist that they aren't responsible for what happened. It really captures a teenagers way of thinking.
In saying that they never thought they would die for their sins I think he means that they were careless kids who didn't realize that their mistakes would haunt them forever.
The song really get's me choked up during moment of regret. Obviously not everyone has these same problems but I think anyone who had an awkward phase can relate to the feeling of soul crushing regret at things they did in the past. |

This song makes me think of the whole metaphor of mother nature, with us as her children. It alludes to kids being both lovable but also selfish and loud.(for example "making mama so proud but your voice was too loud") When it says "a family of trees wanted to be haunted", I feel that it's saying the earth chose to nurture us and give us life even though we are the ones who are ruining, or haunting it. The line "take only what you need from it" could clearly allude to our greed which is harming our "mother" earth |

I think the use of the word "unsteady" seems like a double meaning. on one facet it is a child... think a toddler who cant walk without holding his parents hands because he's wobbly... a picture of youth. on another side it shows the family breaking apart. They are unstable and causing the child distress. |

I'm pretty sure I saw an interview where the singer said that the song was about seeing a beautiful woman across the room and being really attracted to her only to have her turn around and turn out to be your wife! Hence "eyes that know me". With that information, I interpret the song to be about a failing marriage only to find that they still love each other when he realizes the beautiful woman he wnated so badly is actually his wife. |

I think its about the singers romantic interest leaving him and getting with someone else. He wants her back and he is jealous and disgusted by her new lover. It really captures the sickening feeling of jealousy that we all know so well. |

I think it's about being with someone she loves but who hurts her and eventually she is so tormented it drives her to resent the few kind things he does do for her (perhaps because it feels insincere from someone who has harmed her) and crave more of the abuse. Its about how the victim can come to feel they deserve what is happening to them and it changes their perception of what is normal in a relationship. |

It's about how people look down on whores as less than human, and yet they only exist because of the poverty and violence that drove them there and the same people who cast judgment don't do anything to help them have a better life. In addition, people who pay to have sex with whores are hypocritical enough to look down upon the person providing those services. |

It is about a person who feels extremley lonley. They feel they haven't been truly loved since they were a child. Instead of reaching out everyone ignores them until one day the person finally dies. Then suddenly everyone feels sorrow and guilt and claims to care for the deceased and finally the person is loved again like they were when they were a baby, but they are gone and it is too late. |

The song is about how when a person dies everyone says kind words and shares fond memories and claims the deceased was a great man or woman, however when that same person was alive they felt alone and unloved. It's about how people don't really pay attention to those who are alone and suffering until they are gone and just a memory. Only then do they remember the "child" (or adult who had been lpnley since childhood) and feel sorrow. |

I think he song is about choosing between an average, boring, safe life, or really "living", making easy money, but being doomed to a life of danger, disease and a likley early death. I think everyone knows that person who just can't walk the straight and narrow path and can't get ther life stable. This song is about that persoin. |

I think she's talking about being involved with an unfaithful, unreliable, emotionally unavailable guy. She also clearly sees herself as a bad or unworthy person who can't control her own actions. She believes they are meant to be together because they are both so flawed. By saying "We'll all be portions for foxes" she is saying they will just be food for scavengers one day, or in other words "We are all going to die someday, so why not do what we want?" or "YOLO" Haha. |

In addition to my previous comment I wold like to add that the lyric "hooray hooray I'm your silver linging" either refers to how when she was in the relationship she was just happy to mean anything to him because of poor self esteem, or it is sarcastic, kinda like a "Oh, gee, thanks". |

I see the phrase "silver lining" as the best of a bad situation. I think the songs is about a relationship in which the guy doesn't really appreciate his girlfriend but shes all he has so she's the "silver lining" of what he sees as his bad love life. By "running through fields of hitchhikers" I think she means that the guy is fooling around with other women which gives her the incentive to leave. When she says "Now I'm gold" she means that without him she was able to become stronger and more valuable than she could with his presence keeping her down. |
