My thoughts may be controversial but I believe the pipe and penny also blow to puff refers to amys struggles with CRACK cocaine and Blake's preference for "blow". A copper penny is used to cool a too hot crack pipe so it can be reused sooner. (Swim) just a thought. Also, from referencing her other songs I believe black actually refers to her choice in men. Blake was the only significant white man she ever dated. I believe this was a "huge" insecurity for him and a source of their fights. One song references his inability to perform sexually because of his drug abuse "in the morning when your shit works" (just friends) |

The song is definitely an amy original...roberta flak? has a credit for a song same name, different song. And if there's any doubt of the meaning...check out addicted. Amy was not afraid to sing of her live for the green...shes just genius at couching her double meanings. Genius
