Soilwork – The Windswept Mercy Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this has a simple interpretation, and it has to do with the erosion of religion and the rise of self-guidance/enlightenment without needing to look up to a higher being to guide us. However without faith we begin to realize it's true value (to fill the void of desperation and awareness of our inevitable end within us).

But when faith is no more, does that mean it ceases to exist when we turn our backs on our those past ideas? Now that we are able to think for ourselves, the stories of religion that teach us mercy, kindness, and forgiveness will fade. Without these concepts in our mind, we are able to feel the pain and consequences of our flawed nature. However, "as we progressed", we are able to carry this burden into the final collapse or end of humanity with self-awareness/serenity. The final part of the song speaks of the inevitability of our end, again acknowledging our flawed human characteristics when speaking about our dirty minds and filthy needs. The last few lines show the true value of our past beliefs as we see the regret of straying from faith and a desire to be taken back to the time when we were guided by a higher power, a time when we were able to overlook the flaws of humanity.
