Phil Collins – In The Air Tonight Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the references to "oh, Lord" are literal ... a conversation between a man and his God. God has seen his life...if he was drowning he wouldn't lend a hand.

"Well I remember, I remember, don't worry, how could I ever forget
It's the first time, the last time we ever met" ... this can't be a friend...the first time the met was the only time. From the God angle...i suppose that would be the man's birth - his creation...the only time they have met.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Mayonaise Lyrics 11 years ago
actually i should have said..."cool enough to not quite see it, doomed"
so many people patting him on the back as a successful musician that he didn't see his own failings, that his real personal life wasn't very successful....in fact he was doomed.

Billy Corgan is often brilliant with his lyrics of describing feelings of emotion...in his case it's often (failure, disappointment, disillusion etc.)

I think these lyrics are autobiographical. The first couple of lines refer to his reputation as a famous musician (cool). the minute you start thinking of yourself as cool -- then you're doomed. Cool enough (famous musician) to almost be it -- again, cool (successful, confident etc.)...but actually, Doomed.

The public thinks of him as successful and cool. He's rumored to the straight and narrow...(public image successful musician)... while the harlots of his perils scream... (in reality, his failed relationships, all his faults ...scream their reality.

Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven Lyrics 11 years ago
And if the ground's not cold
Everything is gonna burn
We'll all take turns, I'll get mine too

Man ruined the environment...global warming...This monkey's gone to heaven, i believe, refers to the human race (evolved from monkeys).

Everything is gonna burn
We'll all take turns, I'll get mine too --- "the whole human race will perish"

Elton John – Levon Lyrics 11 years ago
Levon was born to Alvin Tostig (eastern european). Levon is likely an immigrant to America and is prideful of his war wound (WWI ?). I believe the song is about Levon's overwhelming pride. Levon was born on Christmas day -- he calls his son Jesus -- because he likes the name. Really he's just referencing his own birthdate. Again, pride.

Jesus wants to go to Venus (meet a woman and get married, experience love). Leaving Levon far behind. The focus of Jesus is to find Love, the focus of Levon is making money...conflicting values
