Two Door Cinema Club – What You Know Lyrics 11 years ago
Reading the interpretations here has opened my eyes to a whole new view of this song as a break-up song which makes a lot of sense but somehow never occurred to me. To me, this song has always been about denying your own feelings in general and the process of coming aware of them and letting them loose, should this happen in a relationship or not. I don't think it's tied to a specific life event but this emotional process in general which is why the song is so brilliantly easy to relate to.

The narration takes two forms, that of a letter-like narration to someone who keeps convincing him/herself about their feelings and that of the narrator's inner dialogue to demonstrate his ability to understand.

He's not necessarily leaving a relationship but his current state of living, whatever it is, and changing it into something that's "right before his eyes", something he can almost taste, a "new beginning". He asks himself the question "am I the one to try and stop the fire?", describes his self-doubt ("I'm not the best you could have attained, so why try anything?") that keeps holding him back. I think that the whole message of the song lies in the brilliant contrast in this line - "and I can't say it's what you know but you've known it the whole time". Thus the song addresses those fears and prejudices that subconsciously prevent the person from moving forward and tries to encourage him/her to face them, grow through them and move forward - in a few weeks, maybe next year, etc.

Arctic Monkeys – Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High? Lyrics 11 years ago
This song reminds me of the relationship I had with my girlfriend before we started dating.

The protagonist is obsessed with the idea of this girl he's infatuated with but can't "get through the gears" enough to connect with her so all he ends up with are stoned 3AM messages and missed calls and dreaming of bumping into her in the hazy scenes of his life. The way he treats the girl bores her and raises the question in her head - why'd he only call her when he's high? Is he really interested or is this just a lonely pothead's cry for comfort?

There's excellent dialogue going on in this song between the guy and the girl and they both seem to have a hard time understanding the emotions of both each others and themselves. I know exactly what this is like from personal experience and all I can say is I'm glad I eventually pulled myself together enough to make my point clear. Brilliant song anyways and I love the psychedelic rap vibes going on which really emphasize the drugged up atmosphere of the song
