So let's begin. "The snow glows white on the mountain tonight Not a footprint to be seen, A kingdom of icealtion And it looks like I'm the queen, The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside Couldn't keep it in, Heaven knows I tried" She wants to escape reality, into her own world, where she can be the boss of herself. But her emotions carry over. "Don't let them in, don't let them see Be the good girl you always have to be, Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know, Well now they know" She was always taught to suppress her emotions, and so, suffered a life with bottled up emotions. But they didn't do her any good. Because her bottles leaked. But in that, she learned that her emotions could be let free. "Let it go, Let it go Cant hold it back anymore Let it go, Let it go Turn my back and slam the door And here I stand, and here I'll stay Let it go, Let it go The cold never bothered me anyway" She is fine with letting go of her emotions, because they've always wanted to be free. She doesn't care if people don't accept her for who she is. Because she was always taught to blend in, but that isn't the kind of person she is. She's fine being by herself, because at least then, she can let her emotions run amok. "It's funny how some distance makes everything seem small, And the fears that once controlled me, can't get to me at all Up here in the cold-thin air, I finally can breathe I know I left a life behind, but I'm to relieved to grieve" Once she distanced herself from the situation that was her life, she is in control of her own life. She doesn't have to listen to anybody else. She doesn't have to be anybody else. She doesn't have to fit in anymore. She can be herself, but that would mean leaving her old life behind, the one that caused her so much anguish, but she's fine with that. "Standing, Frozen In the life of chosen, You won't find me, The past is all behind me Buried in the storm" She is able to stand tall in a world that doesn't accept her. But it doesn't affect her. Because nobody has the power to have control over you and what you feel and fear, unless you give it to them. And that power is hers and belongs to nobody else. |

Too many people take this literally. But who am I to judge? So to begin: "I used to rule the world Seas would rise when I gave the word Now in the morning, I sleep alone Sweep the streets I used to own" I take this as, the author has been living at the top of his own world. But then suddenly, he was pulled into the harsh world of reality where he is actually near the bottom. "I used to roll the dice Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes Listen as the crowd would sing 'Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!' " Being on top in his world, he was used to getting what he wanted. He was rich, that he would gamble, and he wouldn't care if he lost because he had so much money. He was used to being feared of, as he was extremely powerful in his own little world. The crowd was his followers, who supported every decision he made. That's from the perspective of the author. From reality's point of view, he was delusional. He would gamble constantly, and he was feared of because he was violent, or he would take money from innocent people. The crowd represents the people he's hurt because of his gambling problem. "One minute I held the key Next the walls were closed on me And I discovered that my castles stand Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand" One moment he was in complete control of his own world. The next one, he was forced into reality, a realm he had no control over, and this hurt him. It made him realize that he was delusional, building his world over a faulty structure. He had a world that wasn't based on reality, and when it finally fell, he fell into shock. "I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain Once you go there was never, never an honest word That was when I ruled the world" The only person that loved him was in his own little world, i.e. a figment of his imagination. He 'married' that 'person', and that 'person' was his only supporter. That 'person' helped him with every choice he made, every war he fought, every decision in his life. When nobody else did. "It was a wicked and wild wind Blew down the doors to let me in Shattered windows and the sound of drums People couldn't believe what I'd become" This is one of the consequences of his gambling problem. He broke into houses to satisfy his need for money. But in his delusion, he thought he was just collecting taxes. "Revolutionaries wait For my head on a silver plate Just a puppet on a lonely string Oh who would ever want to be king?" He's telling people not to kill him. Because it wasn't his fault. He was just in a delusion. And he's sorry. He was just a pawn being controlled by his delusions. And he doesn't want anybody else to suffer the life he was forced to live. "I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Calvary choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain I know Saint Peter won't call my name Never rule this world But that was when I ruled the world" This is much like the repeated stanza before, except for one line. He knows that he's done some pretty bad things. And he knows he'll never get into heaven. Because he didn't get sober soon enough, and now is paying for it. And his lover is gone. Because they didn't exist. That's it. Really. |
