| Dio – Lord of the Last Day Lyrics | 10 years ago |

"I love the night So many shadows Unholy light Putting out the spark Leave 'em in the dark - forever Ooh" Sounds like a Satan figure; reminds me of "Lord of this World" by Black Sabbath. This entity wants to put out the spark of human lives forever. "I can wait for you Your end is my life All lies are true Secrets of the heart And you can take them all - To heaven I don't feel pain or sorrow The child's a man tomorrow Crossing the line - Then he's mine" Patient like a spider, waiting for the child to become a man and cross the line of temptation into sin. "Then he's mine." "Don't care which god you follow Whose promises you swallow Time and again We must meet at the end Aaah" Whatever your belief system, if you choose to live for evil, you'll meet whoever this is in the end. Misery loves company, as they say. Who is the "Lord of the last day?" "He who rejects Me and does not receive My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day." John 12:48 |

"Father and son, crying for the children of the night, I am light." These seem like references to God, and his compassion towards those lost in darkness. Eriel (AriEl) in Hebrew, means "Lion of God." This expression is used of the Christ, or Messiah. "Don't believe with only eyes" seems like a reference to faith. "Truth that meets the lies and then dies" could be a reference to Christ. Jesus referred to himself as "the truth." False accusations led to his execution--lies. Faith in Christ leads to resurrection, "rising higher than the sun." "Maybe the answer is somewhere back there in my brain." Ronnie was raised with faith, but had trouble with the "tactics" of the church. He didn't like the "scare" tactics he was familiar with, or some of the extra-biblical teachings of the Catholic church (e.g. forbidding birth control). Even so, he thought highly of Jesus Christ, and often wrote songs exploring spiritual themes. Man on the Silver Mountain is one example. In one interview, he also said that the "Holy Diver" is a Christ figure, giving his life even though the people he died for don't really appreciate the significance of the act. Sometimes I think Ronnie got inspiration from somewhere, and maybe wasn't even aware of it. A lot of his lyrics are truly profound. He had a rare and beautiful gift. My life is much richer for his choice to share that with us all. Until we meet in the Temple of the King, may God give peace to your soul. |

@[Nightrain50:3529] Ronnie did say in an interview that the song is about Jesus Christ. He was raised Catholic and was very interested in spiritual things. Ronnie also said that "Man on the Silver Mountain" (with Rainbow) was about God. Both portray God and/or Jesus in a positive light. Ronnie didn't have a problem with God; but didn't like abusive religion. Tbh, I don't think God likes abusive religion either. "Temple of the King" (also with Rainbow) seems to be a spiritual song too; may also be about Jesus going to the Temple shortly before his crucifixion. Was "in the year of the fox," and Jesus called King Herod the "fox." The temple at the time was also known as Herod's temple. So for the guy who called "B.S." on this being a song with Christian themes, Ronnie did lots of songs with Christian themes. Not sure if all the detail in this interpretation fits what Ronnie had in mind, but the meaning of art to some extent is always in the eye of the beholder. |

"You've seen life through distorted eyes You know you had to learn The execution of your mind You really had to turn The race is run the book is read The end begins to show The truth is out, the lies are old But you don't want to know" Someone who sees life in a distorted way, has had a chance to turn, but didn't take it. This person then lives in a way that lies to and cripples others. In the end, for those who persist on this course, there will be a reckoning. "Where can you run to What more can you do No more tomorrow Life is killing you Dreams turn to nightmares Heaven turns to hell Burned out confusion Nothing more to tell" |
