| Angus and Julia Stone – Hold On Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Like many of their songs, I think the meaning of 'Hold On' can be interpreted and representative of many situations. To me, today, this song is about love, and waiting for love to be realised. The first verse talks about waiting for someone, waiting in the hope that they will one day become the one to walk by your side. Waiting for the guy to show his vulnerability and take the chance that she might just feel the same way. Her long lived hope and desire for him to love her the way that she loves him. Waiting for him until he feels the time, place and space is right to commit to something more. Time continues to pass by and she continues to wait, holding out for the day he sees her and loves her in the way she does him. Despite the conscious decision to 'hold on', nothing changes and he 'breaks apart' the hope and desire she holds for something more with him. The chorus is about her questioning why she allowed herself to wait for so long - not even considering other options as she was committed to him, or at least, committed to the idea of him and what they could share together. The second verse is about her continuing to wait, in the safety of the space she knows. Perhaps justifying her decision (to 'hold on') to her friends / family, and maybe even to herself. The chorus at the end may be about questioning him, if he had once told her to 'hold on' (until he gets himself sorted), but more likely about her questioning herself. The above is how I interpret this song, today, as I feel it relates pretty well to something going on in my world. Tomorrow, the meaning could be different... |

| The Offspring – Self Esteem Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Lyrically, a much deeper song than given credit in its time. Def open to interpretation, but the key elements are fairly clear to me. This is a song about a shitty, dysfunctional relationship where the guy is clearly being used, yet it also gives an example of how things in general can be for someone with low, or no self esteem - better to be unhappy with you than unhappy without you... More specifically... The song starts with the guy acknowledging the r/ship is destructive and that things need to change - not prepared to keep going with this and is considering / working out how, to end it. He's sure he deserves better. He cares for her a great deal - clearly more than she does for him. When the door opens (when he sees her again), he questions his decision to end things, and considers (?) that if he can ever be / ever give her what she wants, maybe she will eventually realise that he can be the 'special guy in her life'. That this 'arrangement' is not solely sex - there could be so much more, and that he not only cares for her, but will give his all to make her happy. The second part is about him accepting the way she treats him, and believing that he's not worth anything more - that's all he deserves (hence the low self esteem). She's a good chick - why else would she do this to me? The following part is about rejection, disappointment and hurt. He goes to all ends to make sure everything is ready for the perfect night, and she doesn't show. He's shattered, and likely then thinks that this is all he's worth (nothing) - proven in his eyes by her repeating the same behaviour again and again. The ending is def a message to her - he's given his all, and she's simply laughed at him. He's wanting her to know that despite being a part of it, he's not into the bullshit games. Not sure what she's feeling or why she acts the way she does - I only know him... |
