This has quickly become one of my favorite Sonata Arctica songs. It's been stuck in my head for days now, I love the vocals and they way it tells a quick story. It makes me think about how we have a tendency to become comfortable in our lives and sometimes only act to change anything when ourselves, our loved ones, our lifestyle, etc. are threatened. To me the story of a man (and his family, maybe) confronted by this wolf in the wilderness shows how a man can become more powerful and perhaps in some cases even become frightening when overtaken by the fear of losing what they love. I love how the story builds up, and how it ends at "The wolf in your eyes blinks first and dies". To me this represents the man being overcome by his fear, but ultimately facing it and conquering it by drawing strength from his desire to protect what he holds dear. I think the line just above, "We function when it's controlled by denial", is either a representation of that moment when we deny our fear and overcome it or a comment about how we go about our normal lives and forget about what we fear until we are forced to face it. Those are my thoughts, anyway! Maybe I'm trying to read into it too much and that's not what they were going for at all, but I'm really enjoying this song and pondering the message of the lyrics. I'd love to hear what others think of it! |
