The Killers – Spaceman Lyrics 11 years ago
I've interpreted the song as, much like others, an attempted suicide in which he is 'abducted' by doctors. However, i have a slightly different interpretation of the chorus, which i feel pretty confident about.

It started with a low light,
here i interpret him lying in bed, semiconscious from attempted suicide,
when an ambulance comes to his apartment and the flashing lights are
shining through the window
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed,
at this point, the EMT are taking him out of his bed and bringing him into the
ambulance
And then they took my blood type,
i take this as a clue to the way he tries to commit suicide; he tries to bleed
himself to death. however this fails and when the EMT give him a transfusion
in the ambulance, his addled brain thinks of it as a blood test
It left a strange impression in my head.
this line i feel refers to the character's confusion about what is happening;
his oxygen-starved brain is failing to understand everything and as a result
he is very confused.

You know that I was hoping,
That I could leave this star-crossed world behind,
this gives great support to the suicide theory; he is depressed and feels like
suicide is the way out
But when they cut me open,
I guess that changed my mind.
when the character awakens from the brink of death, he realizes that he
doesn't really want to die anymore

And you know I might
Have just flown too far from the floor this time,
the character realizes when he awakens that he was so caught up in his
delusional depression that he failed to stay grounded and no longer saw the
world for what it was
Cause they calling me by my name
his name could be called by either his family and friends around him, or by
doctors mentioning him

And they're zipping white light beams
the zipping white light beams could refer to the EMT's flashlight as he
flashes it in his eyes to see how his eyes react, and how he's recovering
Disregarding bombs and satellites
the bombs and satellites here could refer to figments of his
imagination as he hallucinates from blood loss
That was the turning point,
the turning point in which he realizes he doesn't want to die
That was one lonely night
even though the medical personnel are working to save him, he can't speak
and is not spoken to; he is isolated, in a sense

[Chorus]
The star maker says, "It ain't so bad"
i see the star maker as either a psychiatrist talking about the world, or a
doctor talking about his injuries
The dream maker's going make you mad
the dream maker in my eyes is the world; what else truly shaped one's
dreams
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
the spaceman here i think is the main character; he went to the brink of
death and back, like astronauts go to space and back, and has brought his
realizations to those who are depressed like he was
Its all in your mind"
he is telling everyone who is depressed to look down at the world (think of
the line where he mentions flying too far from the floor) and realize that their
suffering and so forth is all in their heads

Well now I'm back at home, and,
he's been released from the hospital
I'm looking forward to this life I live,
the characters view of life has grown for the better
You know its gonna haunt me,
he knows that his depression and his attempted suicide will never leave him
So hesitation to this life I give.
he hesitates knowing that there will be despair in his life still, and forever

You think you might cross over,
he gives advice to people considering suicide
You're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea,
these people are caught between choosing life with its despair and death
and the unknown
You better look it over,
he tells them that they need to rethink everything before they try suicide like
he did
Before you make that leap

And you know I'm fine,
the protagonist mentions (to a friend, psychologist, or nobody at all) that he
is okay and that he has grown from his depression
But I hear those voices at night sometimes,
those voices refer to his despair; sometimes, late at night, he begins to feel
depressed again
They justify my claim,
the 'voices' of despair suggest that he was right in attempting suicide

And the public don't dwell my transmission
this suggests a motive for his suicide; trying to get his message out there
about how he was suffering
Cause it wasn't televised
however, people don't really think about his suffering because he never died;
his 'message' wasn't published on the news (think a report about his
suicide)

But, it was the turning point,
here he could be talking about the night when he tried to die; he was all
alone with his pain
Oh what a lonely night

[Chorus:Repeat x2]

-i don't quite understand this portion, but i think the gist of it is that the GPS
is his mind, and it is swayed by what people say; his sense of reality is
slightly off, shown by the lines about the Nile. i also heard that there is a
theologist who talked about the Nile running from east to west; sadly
google is spammed with yahoo answers questions from people who don't
understand that the saying is a metaphor for something, so i can't link it-
:(

My global position systems are vocally addressed;
They say the Nile used to run from east to west,
They say the Nile used to run, from east to west.

And you know I'm fine,
But I hear those voices at night,
Sometimes
-see previous iteration of these lines-

[Chorus:Repeat x2]

It's all in your mi-I-ind,
It's all in my mind
at this point the main character settles on the understanding that his
downcast worldview is merely his pessimistic imagination, and that the
world is better than he once thought :)

Note: all of this is just my speculation, and a lot is pretty heavily based off of my
own impressions; i'm eager to see what others think, and i really think
that no matter what the song is about, it must be something really deep
for the discussions about the song to last so long. also keep in mind that
this is my first post here, so forgive any mistakes here!
