There are several wrong lyrics above so I'll correct them as I go. The lyrics to Bull Black Nova are, of course, fiction. Jeff Tweedy hasn't murdered anyone and then led police on a high-speed chase. In the song he has committed a murder. He is covered in blood. He's being chased by the cops (they're coming up the shoulders). He wants to know "what they found, he wonders if they know". Obviously is paranoid and wondering if they know about his crime. He's high as he's racing in his Nova while the sun goes down. He knows "this can't be undone or outrun". In the final verse he "keeps calling, there's blood in the sink" He's trying to call someone, he's paranoid and can't think. There's blood in the trunk. The last line is "I keep calling, there's blood in the trunk, I can't calm down, pick up, pick up". He's calling someone and he wants them to just pick up the phone. That last line is misinterpreted as many different things. All of which make no sense but people obviously hear lyrics that aren't actually there. This song, in my opinion, is Tweedy writing about something he is obsessed with. True-crime TV. I recognized immediately, as I also watch a lot of true-crime television. He's basically being a writer. Songs don't have to be fact. People sometimes forget that. |

For the people speculating on Tweedy's faith, he's Jewish. And a songwriter. You don't have to read so deeply into literal meanings in songs. He's a lyricist. And a brilliant one. Oh, and Cherry Ghost means a "happy memory". |
