this song resonates with me after losing a lover to suicide. He or she or they have succumbed to death, they choose to leave this existence, instead of drowning or trying to stay afloat. They let the water take them, or the flood of crisis and unknown, the despair or apathy…the choice is made. Beautiful song. |

To me this song resonates with my experience losing my lover to suicide. I’ve always loved the song but it took on a deeper meaning when I experienced a tremendous loss of a love who took his own life, who I wish I could sing this song to now. This song is so craftily written and very powerful. I am left with the impression of weeds as people, they are everywhere and can grow in almost any condition. Weeds vs. flowers...does the answer vary from one gardener to the next? Is it a matter of opinion? When out walking in Springtime, I see so many beautiful plants, colorful and intricate, many of them defined by botanists as weeds. How to tell a weed from a native plant isn't easy, not to me anyway. Many weeds have nutritious benefits, like dandelions. I am on a tangent here, but this song provokes thought.
Is this song about survival and growth and adaptation, about life and human beings and words, relating, being? This terribly vague question many people have remarked upon already, and I think it's pertinent. I like to play MM songs on repeat, especially ones like this.
