I always thought this song - placed as the last one on 18 Tracks - was a sort of "goodbye". This is the end of the dream that made Bruce write all those beautiful songs about love, truth and the american way: he lost, we all lost; all our promises - both the ones we made and the ones that were told us - are broken, and there is no reason to keep on hoping something would change. So, "I got a job [but] some nights I don't go", there was a sort of "promise" between me and my fans, but now I feel like I broke it: no more "Born to run", no more "Jungleland". As the last line said: "Thunder Road, take it all and throw it all away"; but I also think this song is the best goodbye we can hope for. |
