This song is more of a memory to me because of how realistic the lyrics are and how it reminded me of this long time crush I had that "supposedly" liked me. I think the meaning of the song is that it talks about a lover wanting to know if the person he loves, loves them back. By the end the lover is just tired and irritated but the person he loved finally gets the message, but knows that it may be too late. The first verse just mainly talks about the fact that the lover is very fond of his love "I dreamt about you nearly every night this week 'Cause there's this tune I found that makes me think of you somehow and I play it on repeat Until I fall asleep Spilling drinks on my settee" but it also talks about him knowing that person that he loves, loves him back but is just too afraid, shy, or hesitant to tell him for some reason which leads him to asking.. "How many secrets can you keep?'" and with putting these hints of 'hey tell me you like me or whatever' by saying these statements.. "Have you got colour in your cheeks? Do you ever get that fear that you can't shift the type that sticks around like something in your teeth Are there some aces up your sleeve? Have you no idea that you're in deep?" The second verse starts to elaborate on just stating 'tell me now, please. I can't help myself' with statements like.. "So have you got the guts? Been wondering if your heart's still open and if so I wanna know what time it shuts Simmer down and pucker up I'm sorry to interrupt it's just I'm constantly on the cusp of trying to kiss you" with the "heart's still open" and "simmer down and pucker up" like the lover knows that the person he loves does love him back. But then he ends the verse with.. "I don't know if you feel the same as I do But we could be together, if you wanted to" so that there is no pressure and that you should just spill out the feelings openly. Now with the chorus, it just adds on the ideas, conclusions, and mainly the confrontations with finally just stating.. "(Do I wanna know?) If this feeling flows both ways (Sad to see you go) Was sorta hoping that you'd stay (Baby we both know) That the nights were mainly made for saying things that you can't say tomorrow day" and that its just happen at night when you are just very vulnerable. The lover is just tired and just needs to know "if this feeling flows both ways" but then the person he loved just leaves.. "was sorta hoping that you'd stay". Then they add the occasional.. "Crawlin' back to you." which shows that the person he loved is now craving forgiveness and to take her back, but he just keeps stating.. "Ever thought of calling when you've had a few? (calling when you've had a few) 'Cause I always do ('cause I always do) Maybe I'm too busy being yours to fall for somebody new Now I've thought it through" showing that he gave it his all and that he tried his best. But then he finally concludes "Now I've thought it through" and that he is just done with her. Officially ending the song with "Do you want me crawling back to you?" to show if its worth it.. |
