I never thought it was about gays, but I can see how it could apply. At first I thought it was for people who are fighting substance abuse, but then I changed my mind and thought it was about domestic violence. (After I became a victim!) I think it apply s to many topics, that is how it is written, but I think her inspiration was from domestic abuse- for victims and abusers to stick together and change things because it is a choice. She says "this is the life that we choose" I dont think gays choose to be gay, well some, but also many who are born.

This song is to her mother, who was abused by her father. Kelly witnessed this and usually when a child witnesses such events a boy becomes an abuser and a girl becomes a victim of abuse (later in the song). The mother relied on Kelly for support, although Kelly was too young to deal with such trauma."I can not cry because I know thats weakness in your eyes" refers to her parents teaching her that being upset was not ok (blocking emotions). She says she won't make the same mistake as you did (broke down and put up with it-continue domestic voilence cycle) and the "i never strayed to far from the side walk ) refers to love. Most children who witness abuse in childhood never truly love another as an adult because they fear rejection and abandonment. At the end of the song she admits that it got the best of her and she is now a victim of domestic violence as an adult-her lifes empty because she cant let her walls down.

I was not abused as a child, however my boyfriend was and emotionally abuses me , it is truly something so sad, he is in complete denial-his life has been robbed from him. I am trying to find a way out but its hard =(
