I think this song is about fighting, even through the bad, even when you're very low. "I don't know what I've been fighting for But something inside me won't go quietly" This suggests that things have been so hard for the persona that they can't even fathom the point of fighting - what's it worth? What is s/he fighting for? But, despite this, they have a survival instinct - they are a fighter, even if they don't know why. "I am here and I will be Following my own way Forever and a day I am here and I'm here to stay" These lyrics show that they will always be true to who they are, and not let life change the things they do; she'll continue to "follow my own way" in life for as long as she lives ("forever and a day"). "I am here and I'm here to stay" is one of my favourite lines of the song; she's fighting and she will continue to, life isn't going to break her down and push her out. After this, the lyrics become plural and she is talking about people in general/everyone, as well as herself. "Anywhere you lay your heart's your home Stand your ground if they push you down" This part is saying that you should always defend and protect what means the most to you and what you love - no matter how hard things get, always stand by what is important to you. "I never knew when enough was enough Or whether to stay when the going was tough But I won't let a little heart be afraid" The overall meaning, in my opinion, is TO "stay when the going IS tough". The "little heart" bit could be about protecting other people, and stopping them from being afraid? This part could have several interpretations if you want to look into it that deeply. All in all, this song has a very positive message: keep fighting and never give up, even when things get very tough. |
