This song doesn’t have a single source or meaning. One level it was in part inspired by some event that happen among teens Lorde knew. But, at she is making analogies with other more universal ideas. Then she brings it back to herself. Certainly the opening isn’t about war or politics but about some partying teens. Drinking and two friends come to blows. Dropping glasses just to hear them break You've been drinking like the world was gonna end (it didn't) Took a shiner from the fist of your best friend (go figure) The teen group is referenced again The sun's starting to light up when we're walking home Tired little laughs, gold lie promises So the teen group view of the song can be maintained. However, in typical Lorde fashion there is more to it. There is a projection of the teen world into the larger politico /military realm. Glory and gore go hand in hand And We gladiate but I guess we're really fighting ourselves Roughing up our minds so we're ready when the kill time comes Alludes to something more serious than a youth scuffle. She is stating that in essence the minor teen conflict is of the same essence at political battles and wars. They are all driven by interests, pride, and chance, just on a larger stage. In another twist she brings it back to her own impending entry into pop stardom posing an analogy between herself and a gladiator. Let me in the ring, I’ll show you what that big word means. She is ready for it. |

| It does have a rather martial drum beat to it...doesn't it? So the war on TV is contrasted with joys of summer in New Zealand. | |

Just a thought: "I'm glad that we stopped kissing the tar on the highway (and I like you)" This could mean that they have turned of the paved highway (perhaps at high speed) "We move in the tree streets" means they are now moving slowly through streets lined with trees. I think all of this drugs stuff (heroin of all things) is way off the mark. This is about a car ride. |

While this is a popular interpretation and she has her hair styled in a similar way to what courtly women of the pre-revolutionary period in France in the video. I see little else that has to do with that. Although, she is widely read and is well informed about the period (Marie Antoinette, etc.) she also styles herself as a goth in the video. She also has garbled (demonic?) voice responding with "yeah" responding to her lyrics. It sounds as if it is mocking her as much as affirming her sentiments. Perhaps this is her way of still "fucking with the fun when she is known?" She is obviously aware of some of the extreme "conspiracy" theories around her and she has on some occasion directly taken them on such as in the video "The World According to Lorde" and a recent tweet about the Denver airport. |
