INSECURITY I know a lot of listeners think the "fool waiting on the wrong block" is metaphorical. But I think he is being literal, she is in love with him, he is just really insecure. The song lyrics themselves are pretty clear" "there's a light in your eye that keeps shining" "And the warmth of your smile..." "And you promised you'd love so completely" He even specifically states that he has "no reason to doubt" her. Despite all of this evidence, he is miserable, because of his own insecurity. Then he realizes that it is just his own stupidity, he is waiting on the wrong block! So I think the song is really about how insecurity (and our own stupidity) can "cloud" the "light of the love that I found." |

| That meaning is pretty clear to me, it is interesting to hear the background. I can't believe how many people interpret is as an uplifting song (although it does have a great upbeat beat). Great for weddings, some guy commented. WHAT?!? Are you nuts? The guy's girl is out getting hot with some other guy, and he is just hoping she ends up with him at the end of the night. | |

I agree that the song is great, but I don't know about romantic, it is actually cynical. HE is not able to commit to a relationship. There is nothing out there stopping him, it is HIM. Lyrics: "I'VE broken my heart so many times, I stopped keeping track" "I get all worked up, then I LET MYSELF DOWN" He is looking for a girl to "MAKE HIM WORK" to work it out. Her love is going to CHANGE HIM. It reminds me of a great poem in The Last Unicorn, where the guy is waiting to meet a similar "girl of his dreams." When he finally meets her, he betrays her, and she ends up committing suicide. The lesson: "True love is strong, but habit is stronger." Now that is some funny shit!!!!! |
