I totally agree with catilieu! I love CocoRosie so much because their lyrics are full of meaning if you delve deep enough. Definitely "Tears for Animals" is calling out all of those people who care more about the suffering of animals than the suffering of people. CocoRosie can especially speak to this since they were abused by their father and had such difficult lives. The line "stop the slaughter of our daughters" could have many different interpretations. Most likely, they're referring to crimes against women worldwide (rape, femicide, etc.) or more specifically the fact that millions of infant females are killed every year at birth. The word "slaughter" evokes a slaughterhouse - people care deeply about the slaughter of cows for the meat industry, but the bigger problem is the fact that we slaughter our own kind (and even our own daughters). They speak more about their suffering when they say "my old man/ Left me black and blue and tan", clearly refering to physical abuse. When they say "I've the feeling you'll be kneeling/ When the day turns forever into night", I think they're saying that people who are obsessed with animal rights will likely one day have their "day turn into night" and experience human suffering, and "kneel" i.e. beg for mercy. |
