Keep in mind that Thiessen and Hoopes wrote this in 1997-98, when Marilyn Manson was a big thing to be scared of (despite his lyrics being, as you said, very standard for '90s shock rock) and when they were teenagers who just entered into the world. There's the pun - "I'm starting to despise beautiful people" - that dates the song around that time. Probably heard horror stories about the Antichrist Superstar and its big breakthrough hit "Beautiful People," so they wrote the song to deal with said confusion and found it catchy and controversial enough (TobyMac was against its inclusion on the album) to be on the first album. Now, when you ask Thiessen about it, he'll probably say, "Heh, I was young." It's the obvious beginning of a songwriter. |
