One of my favorite songs, very beautiful. My interpretation is that it's about a girl (Annie) who is making a major life choice to dedicate her life to improving the world. This comes as a sudden realization -- "Seein' the streetlights pass you by / In the reflection in your eyes / Your thoughts collide" which she will "Believe in it ever since" It turns out to be her calling/gift ("Listen to the sounds of the world / Put your heart into it / It's all intuitive") and she touches a number of lives ("Annie dreams of others when she's wide awake / Wishin' on the beauty that they hide away". Maybe even gains some level of fame. However, this path is also somewhat of a lonely one ("What would you do with all the answers? / What would you do if you're the only one?"). The singer promises that even though she's dedicated her life to helping other people, once she's accomplished her life's work, he'll come find her "in the afterglow" and she can be herself again. |
