This song is my anthem for being in graduate school and hating it. "It's only two more years." It's easy to say the song is about a relationship that's gone wrong but I think it's more seriously about getting through something you have no choice but to suffer through. If you can just make it two more years, you'll have new stories to tell, you'll have a new life and a new point of view and the pain you've endured will end. You don't need to face these challenges always with philosophical and existential questions. Sometimes you simply have to survive them. The lines "I've become crueler..." and "This world is killing me." Could easily be about the way the experience has changed the speaker without being actually directed at another person. "I've become crueler in your presence" doesn't actually make sense in context if you think the song is about a break-up. Because all other allusions to his partner are loving and positive. |
