I can't say for sure what this means, but I think part of it is about the guy in a relationship (I'm pretty sure it's about a relationship) overthinking things and being enigmatic and stuff. I always had that problem. And by had I mean it gets worse everyday. Anyway, I also think that the person doing the forgiving in "slowly forgive my lie, lie to save me" is the narrator guy. He is slowly coming to peace with some decision he made that probably hurt the lady, but he either needed to do what he did to save himself or he is trying to convince himself that he is better off and has saved himself. I have no idea about the actual meaning of the raining when he dies part though. |

Ah. Here's a song about divorce. The first set of verses is right on with that. It seems like he is saying that he is just done with Courtney and wants her to get out or him get out, whatever gets them separated quicker because he can't stand her anymore. However, as another commenter pointed out, the "I will never promise to" lines seem to suggest that Kurt knew that he would be draw back to get involved with her. Not in an "I'm sorry lets get married again way" but in a more curious "im not done torturing you" way. For the repeated "pain" parts that's just all he got into with their marriage. It all came to pain in the end. "You know you're right" is about Kurt seemingly giving in to Courtney's demands. He did for a while but eventually around the time they were beginning to split, he probably started to refuse increasingly more and not give her the benefit of the doubt. As we have seen, she can be bossy. She wanted to make Kurt's decisions. Kurt comes out with that sarcastic line which seems at that point like he is giving in to defeat and acknowledging that Courtney won. It's always like that when people separate. Both people are trying hard to win some kind of passive aggressive spiteful revenge. Anyway, the first part of the second group of verses starts with Kurt realizing his new freedom of having his bottled up pain and hatred out in the open now that they are separating. Then he moves on. I cannot tell if he is talking about Courtney or Francis Bean here but both would make sense. The part about the soup seems really personal, but then again it could just go to show that whatever it is doesn't matter. If it's about Francis Bean it could be like Courtney is feeding her hot soup that will burn her. That would be a metaphor for how Francis will get burnt by it all. It seems to me that Kurt was very concerned about his impact on Francis Bean. Anyway, back to the personal interpretation, in my experience as a songwriter, there are some lines like that that will only make sense to me and maybe one other person who will understand. For example, in one of my songs, I trash a girl who trashed me and she took Latin and her nickname for me was Cinderella and there was a thing about a shrimp and how she thought I was some moral person who genuinely cared. I put direct lines in there about it like "My name is Cinderella" which most people would take as a metaphor but it really is just supposed to say to her that I'm talking about you. So we don't really know the soup line. Then the second part of the second group is a repeat from the first part. Then it's more "pain" and "you know you're right." Now we have to stop and asses the song here. It seems like Kurt is admitting defeat and moving on. Now we continue and he changes to "You know your RIGHTS" as in DIVORCE LAW! In typical Courtney Love fashion she would've squeezed every penny out of him. Everyone knows it and Kurt knows it. Let's face it, she's a genius at getting stuff like that. Some say that while they are skeptical about the who killed Kurt thing, there is evidence that Courtney did it in that when Kurt dies, if they're together, she gets the stuff!!! The money!!! The child!!! So she certainly knows her rights. She would've been an excellent lawyer or banker or something like that. But she was too much of a genius for that and she got the money the easy way. Now that is how I see it and I can't see it any other way, but there could be another explanation. I'm not completely sure but I'm the most sure here. Doesn't it just make sense? And Courtney refused to release it for a while because it was about her! Makes enough sense to me. |

I agree with everyone else that it is about trying to help people through really rough times. However, maybe the part that says, "I see your wishes flying / out of time," is saying that the person either does not pursue his dreams because he thinks he does not have enough time to, like he's a business man too concentrated on making money to stop and smell the roses, or it's Chris Cornell saying that the person is running out of time to pursue his dreams and as he waits and does nothing about it, his dreams lose their potential to become reality. And that's why heaven's dead to him. |

To me, this is a song about forgetting the bad and looking at the good in a situation. The subject comes into the city broken down. At some point, she looks at the city in the night and sees how beautiful it is. In the second verse, she is literally looking at the bad things in the city. Again, when she looks up, it's beautiful. The beauty of the city captivates her and heals her.
Great song written by TTB and member Mike Mattison. That's my name, except I have an e where he has an i. Just to make this song a little cooler. |
