| This song is a classic! Being a Midwestern boy (Colorado native) and moving to California, I could relate to this. | |

This song is very depressing, motivational, and scary. "Well if you told me you were drowning, I would not lend a hand I've seen your face before my friend, but I don't know if you know who I am Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been It's all been a pack of lies" These lyrics show something. His friend, probably a lifelong childhood friend, isn't a good person as an adult, he might have even been possessed by a secret society or under the influence of something coughcoughilluminaticoughcough. He says, "I've seen your face before my friend," symbolizing that he could still see his old friend in the monstrosity he was now, but he doesn't know if his friend still understands him anymore. The next three lines were really difficult to figure out. "Well I was there and I saw what you did, I saw it with my own two eyes So you can wipe off that grin, I know where you've been It's all been a pack of lies" This shows that the singer is angry at his friend because he was right there with him the whole time, but the singer never noticed the changes in his friend, and he blames himself. Second line means that he's telling his friend he'll get him back no matter what, even if he has to kill himself. He knows where to start because he said he knows where his friend has been, the place he became evil and/or brainwashed. He says it's a pack of lies because he knows that's not his friend, and no one knows him better than the singer. Phil is saying they don't know his friend, and therefore Phil has the upper hand. Now onto the majority of the song- And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord Well I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord This is saying that he can feel the weight of what he has to do and what he has to go through at a certain night at the place where his friend turned. He's been subconsciously waiting for this to happen all along, he spent all his time with his friend, learning about him and it was destiny that he had to bring him back. He adds in "Oh Lord," as his reaction to how scary it was for him to bring his friend back. These lines symbolize the ending of the singer's life- Well I remember, I remember, don't worry, how could I ever forget It's the first time, the last time we ever met But I know the reason why you keep your silence up, oh no you don't fool me Well the hurt doesn't show, but the pain still grows It's no stranger to you and me The first 3 lines are about him going to the place where his friend turned, and fighting back for his friend. First shows that the fear factor is being cancelled out by the memories of his friend and that gives him courage. He remembers how they met and how the time with him went so fast (he's remembering all this as he destroys the place). Third line is that his friend turns back to normal and is staring in depressing silence as he watches his friend giving up his life to save him. The singer tries to be brave for his friend, but can't deny the pain he'll inflict on his friend in the long run. The last line shows that pain wasn't a stranger to them because they'd endured it all together and never once left each other's side, even when the singer dies. |

This song isn't about someone going through life or experiencing challenges. In fact, it's quite the opposite. To put it clearly, the singer is telling about how you're given this one life to fulfill whatever you want to do and everybody should try to follow their dreams. First piece of evidence is when it says, "Guided by a beating heart." - This is straightforward, explaining how his burning desire to achieve his goals keeps him going. Second is when it says, "I can't tell when the journey will end." The word "journey" and "traveling" pop up quite a bit in this song, indicating the singer's goal is to go places, see things, and experience them. This evidence shows he can't tell when he's done with his passion, and that's a good thing to not know. Third is, "They tell me I'm too young to understand. They say I'm caught up in a dream." This is saying how people in society look down at him and laugh for having dreams and passions since everything in society matters on getting money, married, and new merchandise. When they say he's caught up in a dream, the people are basically saying "Get real. Be normal." Fourth is, "Well life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes Well that's fine by me." This is one of the most important parts. It's saying how life is a precious and fast thing, that can go by in a minute, which is why you should spend it doing what you want and again, following your dreams. Fifth is the main chorus, "So wake me up when it's all over, When I'm wiser and I'm older , All this time I was finding myself, And I didn't know I was lost" This is the singer saying sarcastically about how people tell him he's in a dream (hopes that they think he'll never accomplish). The singer is also saying that even though he may be in a dream (goal) he's enjoying it. He tells them sarcastically how he'll wait 'till he's wiser and older. The next line switches to his normal tone, saying how he was finding who he was and the journey of life was becoming clear to him as he followed his passions. Sixth is, "I tried carrying the weight of the world, But I only have two hands." This shows how he tried to act like a "normal" person and deal with bills, debts, work, etc, but he found he couldn't enjoy life that way. Seventh is very important. "I hope I get the chance to travel the world, And I don't have any plans." He's saying one of his dreams and main dreams is to travel the world, and he says he doesn't have any plans because he learned you can't plan a journey, you have to let it run it's course with you making choices. Eighth is, "I wish that I could stay forever this young, Not afraid to close my eyes" This says how he wishes he could enjoy life forever, but alas, he only has one limited life in this reality. Then he says he can close his eyes (die) after he'll be able to achieve his goals and he won't be scared of death. Ninth is, "Life's a game made for everyone, And love is a prize." This is saying how like a game, you can change what you do in your life and you can either win it (do what you set out to be and achieve your dreams) or lose (the people who're talking to the singer about how he's living in a dream. The part when he says "love is a prize" isn't talking about romance. He's more talking about the feeling of loving life and everything about it, even if it means shutting yourself off from reality (dreams). Overall, this song has very deep meanings and I'm not even sure I got half the stuff I was supposed to figure out. |

I think most of you are missing the point, no offense. The song mentions love, but it isn't really the whole idea of the song. Remember, he says, "I could use some friends for a change." I think this song is mainly about how the singer has a self conflicting personality and most people overlook that when they meet him, thus saying those people aren't really his friends. The singer really wants people to accept him for who he is, and his family didn't understand him either, so he ran away. Evidence- "Sorry to leave, mom, I had to go" When he says "guys," he's referring to his self conflicting different personalities, who act like companions on his journey to acceptance. |
