| I can't even explain how amazing the vocals are on this song. The lyrics bring much to the imagination and exist as a beautiful mystery. This is my favorite male solo performance ever. | |
| ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead – Will You Smile Again? Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I've been a huge fan of Trail of Dead for over 10 years now, ever since I used to sneak out my window in high school to see them play at Emos in Austin. This song is easily my favorite Trail of Dead song. It actually helped me get through a very difficult moment in my life. My grandfather wanted me to write his obituary. When he died, I drove to Dallas the next morning. The obituary was due at the newspaper that afternoon and I was completely unable to form a sentence in my head. I had "awaken and there (I) was not far off from the line before." I ended up listening to this song on repeat full blast from Austin to Dallas and it felt like my grandfather was speaking to me. I felt like the song was written for me at that time in that moment. I was a young journalist and my grandfather had been my biggest fan. I felt like he was asking me if I would write again for him. And being so close to my grandfather, I truly felt like I needed to pretend "the paper's your soul and your blood's the pen," in order to give my grandfather the obituary of his great life that he deserved, written by a descendant of his blood line. When it finally asks if you will smile again for me, it seemed to say that after all is said and done, he wanted me to keep smiling and press on in my writing and life. I know I'm a dork but if anyone from TOD ever reads this, I want you to know how extremely much this song means to me. |

| I've always thought this song was about someone trying to prevent someone else from killing himself/herself. | |
