Matt Corby – Resolution Lyrics 11 years ago
I've always loved this song
and I used to think that it means,
you are my resolution.
Everything I do in this life, is so we can be together,
so I can have you.

I think that's part of it and yet still incorrect.

I get it now.

It's about a boy who is giving up.
He's got a girl but his being with her is his lie.
The person he has become when he is with her is not who he really is.
He has things to figure out so he wants time to be on his own to "bide his time",
until "the rubber leaves the road" or the moment of truth.

The girl has trust issues, she wanted honesty from him and he tried to give his best version of it, but she couldn't trust him though she tried hard.
so he says "control your fear, it's clear that you do not know where you're going to". She has things to figure out too.

And he says "don't you worry, you'll be my resolution"
but I'm not sure.
Does he want to be like the girl? or does he want to be with her someday?
Is it both or only one.
Maybe he doesn't know either

One month down, since they parted ways.
He's guaranteed to lose his mind from missing her so much
and he does want to talk to her
but "It's dangerous to speak and sigh
You might know what I'm trying to hide"
He's trying to hide how he still feels about her,
because they're better apart, they still have things to figure out

"Characters of no illusion"
they can both figure out who they truly are
without the dream-like feel of being in love,
they get to explore themselves and find themselves
in the reality of their parting

"From the cradle to quarter age", his whole life
he's "bought the book but didn't flip the page".
He doesn't know how to commit,
he wants the book and yet doesn't want to read it
he wants the girl and yet doesn't want to treat her right

"Readiness is near"
it won't be long until he will be ready, he knows
and yet he still steers clear of the future
possibly out of fear

"Turn around, put it down"
Well, put what down?
we can speculate.
a bottle of whisky, a blade she'll use to cut herself,
some form of escape

"this is really the place to be"
we were meant to go our separate ways

"i'm not you, nor you me"
you can't expect people to be just like you
i will not be you, and you will not be me,
and that's okay, that isn't how it was meant to be

"but we're both moving steady"
though we're apart, we'll be okay,
we'll find a way to be alright again and move on,
to a better future ahead
