My very favorite lyrics of all time are in this song. Such poignant feeling, and without the least bit of pretense or guile. Beam is a courageous a writer as any I've known. For a blonde southern white man to so delicately voice notions that could easily have been misunderstood and rendered him as a bigot takes true character and vision, and the confidence in his convictions. This song made me want to be a song writer again, and I am forever grateful for that. And people never tell you the truth, nor do they hide it. Like Birds. .... |

this song moves me deeply and i am impressed with the notion that this is an account of a ghost that doesent know he is dead, but falling still to his end, frozen in a moment. the struggle of his life and the loss of his love, drove him to the roof, whereupon he did fall. |

I love this song in a deep, visceral way. i feel the song is about things not ending up as clearly causal as one had naively expected. it is a song about stasis, and the feeling of things turning out less than ideal but realism and lowered expectation comes to define the outlook of an adult in life. i am, i am, lying on my left. in bed. just being whatever i am. as if things turned out the way they did, because i didn't really care anyway. and I'm ok with that, because that is our lot in life. grow up, grow old, grow cold. |
