Mark Lanegan – Man In The Long Black Coat Lyrics 3 years ago
This Bob Dylan song that Mark covered was one of my favourites he sang!
The song is interesting and to me it depicts a woman living on her own, only one dress hanging on the line! She is lonely and longs for a better life, the hurricanes come and go in this part of her world often and she's possibly had enough of living under the constant threat of being alone and subject to elements of the weather. She has neighbours call on her occasionally but she is not often bothered with visitors as townfolk are busy bodies.
She misses a time when things were lively. She goes do the dance hall alone and she is beholden to no-one although I am sure she has men folk wanting to be with her but as she is at liberty to ask men to dance i would certainly think she has no husband or boyfriend to interfere with the decisions she makes. I am also sure no-one in town has interested her as a potential partner. She is looking for something but she is not sure what. She takes a chance to ask a the traveler in the long black coat, to dance. He is a mystery, has no outward expression and is travel worn. He has piqued her interest, yet he is expressionless upon being asked if he would like to dance. I am not sure that he even took her up on the offer to dance and some gossip in town suggests he is a travelling preacher whom they have seen quoting text from a bible.
Anyway suffice to say the traveller must have seen that look in her eye and the next thing she is gone from the town. Gossip has ensued for sure and I can imagine the towns folk thought she must have been either kidnapped but they are not really sure. She has not let anyone know she has gone so specualtion is high enough for the local preacher to give the townsfolk a lecture of mens intentions suggesting that the traveller has captured the girl and ran off with her. And that all men are vile and let their minds controle their actions and cause sin!
I think the last verse of the song suggests that someone is looking for the lady but the search is in vain. That person was possibly someone from the town that had possibly shown an interest in her but was rejected. He is possibly piqued that she ran off with somebody else but I am sure the lady made sure she would not be found and she never left a note to let anyone know. She has either moved on with the traveller or she saw an opportunity to leave town and the traveller has provided her with an alibi without exposing her real intentions to disappear and leave the town behind.

Mark Lanegan – Riding the Nightingale Lyrics 9 years ago
Always was curious as to the meaning of "Riding The Nightingale" so just wondering what others think.
I just thought it means, internally withdrawing into one's own self and being on your own and going over things in a somewhat "dark" manner. rethinking through things, by either talking out loud when no one else is present and then distancing yourself from those very thoughts that you have evoked!
In the last verse when he sings "Who's riding on my nightingale", he's not wanting to know if anyone is, he is rather asking the listener if you are also doing the same thing, being solitary or distancing yourself from the hurt of reality! Not wanting to face the truth about a situation, where you would rather live in the dark about it all! You are trying also to keep others from prying into your emotions, hense the lyrics "better run for cover babe, better hide"...you are sending out a warning not to come to close as coz you don't want anyone to see you in this dark time of your life!
The nightingale itself always sings in the night, when it's at its darkest, it does not wait to see the dawn to tell his story, as it is lost in the noise of the daylight!

Queens of the Stone Age – Kalopsia Lyrics 11 years ago
This is only my opinion on how I see the song. Everyone sees a different story from a song and this is mine, which I thought I would share.

I Love "Kalopsia", it's one of the more deeper songs which explores Josh's psyche and how it has changed after having a family. The "razzmatazz" of touring, and dealing with agents and even the fans is not all as beautiful and he once thought it was. Everyone wants a piece of him.
"...Like Clockwork" is an interesting album which sees Josh explore the "what if" scenario in the event that he had of died during that knee op that went so wrong! The album was produced from reflection and looking to what was really important to him and at that time and it wasn't the music, no it wasn't "all about the music" it was about family and loved ones, who were there for him. He ponders all the times that he has not been there for them!! All the times when demands of touring, recording and getting the bands name out there were important to his survival as a musician, and then it changed! Life changing experiences cause one to reevaluate life although I think Josh has been evaluating his life, all of his life, by dealing with the cannibals and wannabe's, it's the near death experience that helped him to refocus on the little things like love, which we all sometimes take for granted.
Josh dedicates the song to his daughter Camille and it was through her "rose coloured eyes" that he saw life how it really is!
Camille is indeed Kalopsia, she sees her dad and he can do no wrong. It's Josh whom has had the nightmares about life, loss and love. The thought of losing any one of his family, scared him a lot more that he let on. It was all the people whom really matter to him, most in his life that he thought about when he was laid up in that hospital bed for months of his life!
I imagine that every time Josh has to go off and be a member of a band, when he looks into his daughter's eyes, he asks himself "why" do I keep going, it bothers him somewhat until he departs. Josh is the one that has the nightmares about what may or may not transpire along the way in his journeys around the world, and nowadays when he thinks of Camille and his family, the nightmares are banished forever, he has a reason to survive and keep doing the best for them. He keeps the whole "Idol" thing in prospective, it has never been the reason why he is a musician. however he also understands that playing music is also part of his psyche but now the demands of others, like managers, agents and fans have been placed appropriately into the boxes where they belong, no longer able to control his life. In the song he is letting Camille know, he is "Josh" whom sings in a band sometimes but he is still her daddy and he loves her very much all the time. He lets her know that "rats in the race" can no longer dictate to him, as he will decide whats best for himself and his family. He is letting Camille see that there's a side to his life that is not a rosy as everyone see it. There's also the dark side that sometimes kids hear from adults in a malicious way which causes children to worry about their parents. In the song, he asks Camille "Why So Sad" and then Josh reassures her not to listen to them "Forget the Mindless Baboons"!!
Josh by reassuring Camille, also reassures himself too, he chases away those black balloons.
This song is definitely a song about how the unconditional love of a child can help you see things so differently and how your love can be reciprocated back to the child unequivocally!
