Hozier – Take Me to Church Lyrics 11 years ago
sacrifice was more a hebrew or pagan ritual, not a catholic one. though the dark ages certainly might have had sacrifices, I can't speak for dead people's habits. But animal sacrifice was very common among those who wanted to please or appease their gods/goddesses in the olden days.

Twenty One Pilots – Trapdoor Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm pretty sure this song is about how loneliness and depression can eat away at someone's sanity.

"He wakes up early today Throws on a mask that will alter his face" i.e. hiding behind a smile or cheery disposition.

"Nobody knows his real name But now he just uses one he saw on a grave" Nobody knows his real personality, all they get is one he made up. I know that personally I name characters after the names I see on gravestones; but this is also a possible reference to how dead he feels inside.

"He pretends that he's okay
But you should see
Him in bed late at night, he's petrified
Take me out, and finish this waste of a life"
He's afraid of dying but wants to kill himself. "me" here is a gun or a method of suicide, I believe. The singer is taking the position of the suicidal thoughts or depression observing the sufferer.
"Everyone gather around for a show
Watch as this man disappears as we know
Do me a favor and try to ignore
As you watch him fall through a bleeding trapdoor"
People who are depressed often melt away from their friends, leaving them wondering where the person they used to know has gone. The singer is telling the sufferer's friends that they should ignore his problems, which is probably a reference to the oft-repeated mantra "I'm fine." Still, the friends can see he's in trouble but they don't want to put unwanted pressure to get help on him.

"He thinks that faith might be dead
Nothing kills a man faster than his own head"
He can't find the spirituality or faith he used to have, which meant a lot to him. It's making him even more upset, and he loses hope.

"He used to see dreams at night
But now he's just watching the backs of his eyes"
He's not remembering his dreams, if he's sleeping at all. Insomnia can make depression worse.

"'Cause nobody knows he's alive"
He feels abandoned and nobody would care if he died, because he's already dead to the world.

The Antlers – Wake Lyrics 11 years ago
oh god. the last lines - you can't save everyone, and it's pointless to try, so don't abuse yourself or accept abuse, because you don't deserve that.

i'm going to go cry in a corner, this whole album is genius

Noah Gundersen – Fire Lyrics 11 years ago
This is a story about a man from Eastern Europe, maybe Russia, whose mother passed away while he was young. He was raised on the water, practically by nature itself; then he's tempted to the west, by someone who is considered dangerous. It's surprising to him that he takes the offer, as dangerous as it is. Possible soldier connotations? To me, it sounds like he was signed up for the war (possibly WWII?). This 'devil' mention reminds me of the temptation of Jesus in the desert, which I'll return to in a moment.

Springtime: very symbolic, used to represent new life; however, "the frost and ice followed me" perhaps suggesting that he brings war and strife with him to a place that hasn't even left the harshness of winter yet. He (like many soldiers) sleeps with the local women in the area where he fights. 'The Finest' tempts him (recalling the temptation of Jesus yet again) and he submits to her. His sins don't surprise him this time. (maybe they get married? can't tell, don't think so)

Now, after the war has ended, he travels to America to escape his past. He wants the freedom that the West offers him. He hopes to forget his doomed love with The Finest by watching the dancing girls.

Jesus enters the story now, as people tried to convert him once he went to America. But the churches just remind him of the war (makes it more likely that it was some sort of religious war). The people in the churches remind him of the people he lost on the field, and they way that they blindly believed (burned eyes) disgusted him. When he finally found God, it was in the homeless of America (which is often where the most faithful and the most despondent can be found). It didn't surprise him that he found God amongst those commonly considered sinners.

He reminds us that he's still trying to find a home in this new country. All he wants is freedom, but he can't find it.

Fleet Foxes – White Winter Hymnal Lyrics 11 years ago
My favorite part of this song is how "summertime" is the last line, when the song is about winter.

All I can think of is my mom dying, because I feel like I had to step up and take her place in the family. I filled her empty hospital bed, and my face became hers.

They're right, too. When you're grieving, the sensation is like scissors at your soul. Like I tell people; if you're going to laugh or cry, better to laugh. Even if you feel fucking horrible.

Bastille – Laughter Lines Lyrics 11 years ago
This song makes me cry every time I hear it, because though the promise is to meet again when they're old, the immediate moment is a goodbye. It's so painfully bittersweet, and I'm crying again.

Say Lou Lou – Julian Lyrics 11 years ago
This song makes me think of illegal immigration. Let me explain -
The narrator is going to help Julian, her lover, cross the border between two countries. Pretty obvious here:

I'll meet you in the city
I'll stay clear of the light
I'll get us through the checkpoints
Yeah, I know we'll be alright

Oh, Julian
Once we get across the border
Oh, Julian
I'll mend your heart (she'll finally be able to love him the way she wants to)
Oh, Julian
Once we get across the border
Oh, Julian
I'll mend your heart

And maybe we are sinners (breaking the law)
But love, it ain't no crime
I'll get you through the checkpoints
I'll drive us through the night (to avoid the cops)

You know I'll keep your secret
I've locked it up inside (she won't tell anyone he's an illegal immigrant)
As long as we are moving
Yeah, I know it'd be alright (as long as they're one step ahead of the cops, no one can catch them)

I think the song pretty much speaks for itself, but I can see how other interpretations are there. For a while, I thought she was singing "Oh Julia" which put a homosexual twist on the "love ain't no crime" and made me think it was a different sort of border crossing - between the USA and Canada, so they could get married. But Julian is a latino name, which made me think of the Mexico-USA border. Hence this explanation.

Marina and the Diamonds – Hermit the Frog Lyrics 11 years ago
Let me take this bit by bit here -

(Yeah I feel I'm bordered down
Whenever he's around
I put on the frown of frowns
And melt slowly to the ground)

She feels different when he's around, and she defends herself the only way she knows how - by hiding behind a frown.

(Yeah I feel it coming on
When I've been static for too long
And an explosion comes in time
Before I go and cross the line
Oh yeah, I go and cross the line)

The flip-flop from depression to manic - a symptom of bipolar disorder

(Think before you blurt
Out the words you say to hurt
Coz next week you'll be )

Often people with mental disorders don't think about what they're about to say, she probably said something to the guy that he took offense to.

(They say you used to be so kind
I never knew you had such a dirty mind
Well, I went to the doctors believing
The devil had control over me
I was finding it hard to breathe and
Finding it hard to fight the feeling)

Her guy used to be nice, but he doesn't want to deal with her problems so he's being nasty. He tells her she's possessed, so She goes to see the doctor, wondering what's wrong with her and possibly succumbing to a panic attack (hard to breathe)

(That my heart just burst like a glass balloon
And that it fly too high and shattered too soon
I was the wrong damn girl in the wrong damn room
I broke my glass balloon
I let go of my glass balloon)

The glass balloon is her heart - she lets it go because he can't love her anymore, or she's realized he never did.

(Oh oh oh
They call him Hermit the Frog
He's looking for a dog
Did you find a bitch in me
Oh you're a abominable socially
You're just a little bit too much like me)

He stays away from social situations (Hermit). He was looking to find a girl, but she thought he wanted more than just sex. She's obviously angry. The irony here is that he also has social/mental disorders, and she thinks he's a hypocrite for refusing to deal with her problems.

(Think before you blurt
Out the words you say to hurt
Coz last week I was so
But now it'll be you)

Same as before - except now she knows that he's got problems too and she's thinking revenge will be sweet. she wants to see him fuck up.

(Says you used to be so kind
Well baby I give you your dirty mind
I wanna tell you a secret
You can take your double standard love and keep it
I can't help the devil likes to make my heart a double bed
I can't help he sometimes like to come and rest his little head)

She's accepted that he's gone, and she's come to terms with her own problems in her acceptance of the devil in her heart. She's telling him to go fuck himself because he's a huge hypocrite. She's done with him.

(Well my heart just burst like a glass balloon
We let them fly too high and they shattered too soon
They'll be the wrong damn people in the wrong damn room
We broke our glass balloons
We let go of their glass balloons
We broke our glass balloons
Let go of my glass balloon)

In this part she re-establishes the broken heart metaphor, but this time she says that they both broke their hearts - maybe the balloon is also a metaphor for innocence? They lost their virginity to each other and then realized they couldn't work as a couple? I'm not sure.
