This song is kind of killing me right now, and if it is going to eat my brain and become 3/5ths of my consciousness, I want to at least know what it means. I think you have it right, especially about "We sink, we lift our love." It is despairing and hopeful all in a breath: we may not make it, but this somehow will survive us. This part though, has its hooks deep in me, and I can't quite sort it: We are Let me stop for a second Held heart Only beats in the evening Low tide Watching for flight I think it can be read this way: We are (Let me stop for a second) held. Heart only beats in the evening. Low tide. Watching for flight. So: The love affair is stopped. (Because, I think, of his indecision.) The heart, the love, is stilled when it should be moving. Low tide is when you can't set sail; they are caught there. They are waiting for flight, but it is ambiguous as to whether the flight will be running away, or lifting right up off the ground. Hey. I probably have a lot of this wrong, but even only approximately right, this kills. It should be eating my brain. That's what my brain is for. All right then. |
