The theme seems to be an altered state of mind, perhaps high or drunk. The lines - With his simulated wood grain / So I pulled up a chair / And started drinking by myself - sounds to me like an alcoholic in a bar. My interpretation has always been that it's an alcoholic on a three day drinking binge. Maybe there's another deeper meaning. That's the beauty of some songs. They're open to interpretation. |
