I believe this song to be about a dead lover. The death of the lover is implied to be at some fault of the narrator possibly an accident or something a lot more sinister (digging the earth). Either way it's close to where the two (now one) live/lived. The narrator cannot bring herself to go back to a place she once loved because of the darkness surrounding it. Now the narrator has to live in a ''hell on her own'' because of what has happened. Medicine refers to the old idiom that time can heal. But the narrator mocks this claim and says that time will never heal what has occurred or how she feels. It also seems she shows some remorse for her actions as she holds the ''cold hand'' and says she's not going anywhere but her guilt/sadness causes her to anyway. Such a sad and dark song. |

To me, this song is about striving for fame and the general feeling of emptiness one has when they've achieved it. The first stanza suggests how hard the narrator is working to achieve the fame. He's tired but motivated to continue. The second verse is the narrator questioning why he's doing it? He's losing all what means to be human (friends, sleep, routine) in an effort to be admired. The first Chrous mirrors the first and second verse's desire. The third verse takes a different persepective, the narrator is now famous but feels empty. He has admiration and money but no companionship or orginiality. He feels empty both ways. This song to me is about being stuck between wanting a normal life and desiring fame. The narrtaor in the song has experienced both and by the end of the song he is still not content. Very thoughtful and melancholic song. |
