This whole Neck of the Woods album, since it was recorded in the area where Brian grew up, has a lot of elements of his childhood. To me, this song literally is about Brian playing guitar and music in his bedroom in his parents house. I'm a very big SSPU fan and have watched numerous interviews, Brian was at one point, extremely shy about his guitar playing and vocals. And in an interview he talks about how he figured out a way just right to close the vents in his room so his parents wouldn't be able to hear him playing guitar. This song is about his paranoia of playing in his room, constantly thinking his parents or siblings are listening from the outside. Here is a breakdown of my thoughts on the chorus. "What am I waiting for? Somebody to break in" Literally talking about his parents / siblings opening his door while he's playing to tell him to stop, that he isn't good, or something positive, just the anticipation of it, and how he would be embarrassed. "What am I aiming towards? A fight that never ends" I believe this line would be about his parents telling him he isn't good, or maybe that he is wasting his time spending it all locked away in his bedroom messing around with music and sounds. What am I searching for?" A light to shine again" Again just an interpretation, could be about a light from the hallway late and night when he knows his parents have woken up while he's playing, and how it makes him nervous, or maybe a light shining is a optimistic thing and it's his family coming in his room to tell him they believe in him as a musician and the light is his hope to become one, which due to his low self-confidence, isn't always shining. Anyways, food for thought! |

| Silversun Pickups – Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings) Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Brian has openly commented on this song. Most of these interpretations of it are correct. Someone having grown up in an abusive environment and how they are in better place now. Brian has said this song is about wish fulfillment, how he wishes he could go back and help this person through all the stuff they had to go to. The chorus for the song, although seemingly dark because of the nature of the game "Bloody Mary' is actually according to Brian, about how if he could go back, they could be there for each other and just be kids, playing silly games like Bloody Mary, since this person had to grow up very fast due to the bad environment, and never really had the chance to just be a child |

| Silversun Pickups – Mean Spirits Lyrics | 11 years ago |

I believe this song is mostly about his, or the characters, playfully malicious personality, and how it gets him into trouble, which he doesn't necessarily have a problem with since he knows what he is doing. When you are hanging out with people, especially when drinking, and you kind of take little verbal "stabs" at your friends, sometimes crossing the line. "Backyard burnings - outdoor party, with a fire involved I'm easily amused Backs are curling They’re running out of room" - his friends know he's getting into that "mood" maybe after a couple of drinks "Mouth is sharpened In a gruesome display But I’m still waiting For something nice to say" sharpened mouth could also mean sharp tongued which means : a bitter or critical manner of speaking. It's him saying his wit is ready to be used in an evil way, and he's waiting for the perfect moment to say something critical "My spirits are high Mean spirits high" his spirits ARE the mean spirits, hence them both being high, for myself personally after a few drinks I get like this, where I'm in the mood to be sort of mischievous "Please go on and on There's beauty in your venom I love to play and sing along I love to play and sing along" Here he has just switched it saying "your venom" when he really is talking about himself, just for the sake of the song he's changed his viewpoint. There's beauty in your venom is how, people kind of look up to or respect the quick witted mischievous person, there's something attractive about it. Much like how girls love to date the badboys lol. "Too late to decide My lips are open wide I love to play and sing along I love to play and sing along" this means he's thought before he spoke, it's too late to decide whether or not he should say what he has, and he isn't sure if the person he's "ribbing" will be able to take it or not "You stare over my shoulders Are you surprised to see? One more devil Where angel wings should be" Pretty simple to understand, he doesn't have a moral compass guiding him at this time, as there is no angel vs devil on his shoulder fighting or good or evil. Anyways, that is my take on the song, and it works for me. Maybe because it reminds me of how I can get sometimes lol, but having seen interviews of Brian, it wouldn't be so hard to believe he can be a little mischievous, not downright mean, but cheeky with his own friends. |
