To me this song explores the idea of nature vs. nurture. The first two lines seem to explore the thought of being born under different circumstances, such as in a different society or really just in a state of nature. The speaker questions if they would be a different person if they were born in those different circumstances. The speaker questions if would have the same preoccupations and the same cares, and if they "would be saved." To me this line is asking if born differently if they would be of a different faith. To me, this is a beautiful song of "What if?" that questions the origin of our sense of self and where we derive our personality from. |
