I think the music signifies as a way of Margaret telling William she was so injured by the Rake that it killed the baby that's why in the next song he asks if it was "a forest's son or a river's daughter". Also probably a reminder that William did let the Annan Water claim his life which sort of puts a damper on their reunion. |

I don't think the actual story if The Tain with Queen Medb and Chuchulainn has much to do with this song, honestly. I think this song has a different meaning and people are so distracted by the music video to really analyse this song. Of course, I do believe the story did inspire the song since there are obvious connections to some of it "He comes in chain and chariot" or "cattle and maidens and withered old queens" and then there's the extremely clever paradox of "The mirrors soft silver reflects our last and birthing hour."
One could also take into consideration how certain verses have certain speakers. Obviously Meloy is singing most of it but there are different speakers in the song like the Chaplain, the Chorus of Waifs, the Widow, the Soldier, the Daughter, the Woman, etc. and what exactly does that add to the overall story? I mean, it's just something to think about. I feel like people could analyse this further, but just refuse to since the connection is made to the Celtic story. |

| The Decemberists – Won't Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga) Lyrics

I don't understand where people are getting the rape from. Obviously Margaret is in love with William (the fawn-man)
But I thought a good point to add would be how she mentions columbines which are flowers that symbolize foolishness and innocents which could be connected to Margaret and William since I see them as sort of dumb in love. Also, it is considered unlucky to give a woman a columbine due to its biblical association to the Virgin Mary (columbines bloomed at her feet when she was on her way to Elizabeth) which is ironic since Margaret is hella pregnant. Just throwing that out there |

I do believe it is about a girl who was molested by her father, but there's more to it that I can't quite interpret. I do believe at the end though where it states "And a man who calmly calls her 'darling dear' Not 'darling daughter' She sleeps at last" is where the girl has finally found a spouse who loves her hence why she sleeps at last. |
