The song in general refers to anxiety and paranoia. "Keep on dreaming, don't stop giving, fight those demons" The first phrase is pretty obvious: be fearless, don't give up on your dreams, keep on dreaming. 'Don't stop giving' might be a general addition, not really holding any deep meaning (?). 'Fight those demons', that are living inside of him; the dark thoughts might be referred to as demons. Patients of paranoia, anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses report 'voices' inside of their head; or maybe even a separate person living inside them, commanding their actions. "Sell your soul, not your whole self" Many have connected the first phrase to the Illuminati and the Devil (which was the reason for the stir back in 2013: 'Oh my god, The Neighbourhood is Illuminati!'. No, it's not) when it actually is the farthest thing from that. This phrase means do whatever to free yourself, to be happy, but don't change your own self, your own character. "If they see you when you're sleeping, make them leave it And I can't even see if it's all there anymore so" When you're sleeping, you're at your most vulnerable state. So he means to say that if they catch you when you're most vulnerable, flee, defend, just do whatever to make them go; try to escape. The second line means he doesn't even think he's himself anymore. |

This song is a tricky one to crack, as it has been woven so masterfully and with such thought, one can form innumerable theories as to the meaning it holds. One theory is that the singer is confessing his infidelity, and he is talking about two girls here. Notice how in the first and second verse, as well as the second pre-chorus, he refers to his interest as 'you'. Whereas in the first pre-chorus, the subject is referred to as 'she'. It is thus interpreted that she is his girlfriend, whereas 'you' is the girl he is cheating with. If this thesis is applied to the whole song, one can say that the singer is saying that he loves his girlfriend, and she knows him like the back of his hand, but right now he just wants to focus on the girl he is with (sexually) now. If the interchanging use of 'she' and 'you' is nothing of value and if both pronouns refer to one person, this is where the second theory comes to action. A sucker for cheesy and cliché love stories, this is the theory I like to associate the song with and one that I believe is the actual intended meaning. The male is a very cold and guarded person, albeit very ambitious or arrogant, maybe cocky (I want the world in my hands; Head in the clouds but my gravity centered), but he really cares for his lady love, and she knows him and loves him for who he is, while he has the same over-powering love for her. The second verse and a few parts of both the pre-choruses are all about sexual innuendos, so we won't go into that. The lines: It's too cold, for you here And now, so let me hold Both your hands in the holes of my sweater; Aka the chorus, basically signify how although he doesn't have much (or he thinks he doesn't), he wants to make the best of it and give her all of him. The lines can also be taken as metaphors, and they give a bit of character insight on the boy. He is not your average Prince Charming, or your perfect boyfriend. He is very bad in character, but he is willing to take care of the girl, and is asking her to not let him go even though there might be some rough patches. That's what this song is, ultimately, to me. This guy is perfectly flawed, but he really is in love with his girl, and he will do anything to make her happy and protect her, even if it means he will have to give all he has. |
