| The Mountain Goats – Peacocks Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| whenever i think of peacocks, i think of flannery o'connor. she raised peacocks as a hobby for many years, and this album in many ways reminds me of her work, as it tells a story of deeply flawed characters in the american south being violently destroyed by forces of grace acting upon them. peacocks have sometimes been used by catholics to represent the church, and by many throughout history to represent immortality. when the narrator sees the peacocks in the yard, i imagine he is harshly reminded of his own sense of mortality as well as his crumbling wedding vows and moral deprivation, hence his anger/fear/disbelief when asking why there are peacocks in the front yard. although he is ultimately not strong enough to successfully endure the overwhelming convergence of opposing forces, now there is at least hope for some kind of spiritual redemption for our alpha couple, as evidenced by the final line. this album is so brilliantly put together, it's gotta be considered one of his best. | |
