I think thing this song is about having a lot of goals and desires in life but fearing that you won't have enough time or the chances to fulfill all of them. "Now I'm just chasing time With a thousand dreams I'm holding heavy." |

I always thought this song was about a girl who lived in her own fantasy world, or simply is out of touch with reality in some form or another, possibly due to something tragic that happened in her life ("Well you built up a world of magic because your real life is tragic"). It's also about letting go of that fantasy world and coming back to reality, hence the chorus: "Go get your shovel and we'll dig a deep hole to bury the castle." The metaphoric castle symbolizes the fantasy world and burying it is leaving it behind, kind of like the saying "dead and buried" meaning to be ended completely. There's also the bridge that serves as a bit of example for this. "If it's not real You can't hold it in your hand You can't feel it with your heart And I won't believe it But if it's true You can see it with your eyes Oh, even in the dark And that's where I want to be, yeah" The speaker chooses reality over fantasy. That's what I got from it, at least. :) |
