Radiohead – Street Spirit (Fade Out) Lyrics 11 years ago
Can't speak to Freud or Jung, but the most reasonable explanation I've heard for folks from snake-less lands fearing snakes is that our primate ancestors were hunted by snakes, so their ability to detect snakes quickly improved their odds of survival. Our brains are filled with, among many other things, circuits for the visual detection of faces, hands, colors, linear orientations, edges, and patterns of movement. Circuits that facilitate snake recognition and respond with fear-based behaviors such as freezing, fighting, or fleeing are sufficiently useful that we've retained them. Perhaps if snake-less humans were isolated long enough from the rest of us, some human populations would lose that response. But no one is that isolated anymore. (Or, in the spirit of the song, we're all isolated now, but as individuals rather than populations.)
