This song is perhaps the most upfront of LeBon's frequent underlying theme that there is an "Ordinary World", and some other Alternate Reality. Perhaps we create that ourselves, or in fact as we often suspect, there truly is an alternate dimension or timeline we can move from a gloomy existence to an enlightened one. Throughout his music, he does make a convincing argument. |

At the time when it came out, within the video, and even more so nowadays, I always thought it was about living under surveillance. Not a paranoid person, but someone who has come to accept it as a fact of life and sees the folks watching him as a kind of a friendly anonymous acquaintance. He wonders what their intentions are and would like to be advised on what would please them. The lyrics seem to address what we are feeling at some point in our lives; as if we are living in a prison, and for everywhere we go, it's really just an illusion. |

Although, at the time, it could not have been written for what it describes to me now: a Global Warming Activist. It writes of the person's paranoid obsession with the weather, and how conceptually, they are pulled to the spinning Earth but could be thrown off.
I recall long ago Simon LeBon always hoped that his lyrics would remembered and studied as poetry. He really, in fact, wrote many music lyrics of such a metaphysical nature questioning conventional reality constructs that, like "The Sound of Thunder", have been poetic masterpieces lost in plain sight. |

I imagine that the context of this song involves a breakup and her father (who approved of him) has called him to find out what has happened. That would be who the song is addressed to, explaining that he has done all he could, this new guy she left him for is trouble and there's nothing neither of them can do about it. |
