A Van Morrison expert? Well that statement automatically made me switch off.

The National – American Mary Lyrics 11 years ago
Kiss me with your silver eyes? A metaphor for money. The dollar is what holds the singer to America. All he's looking for is financial attachment. The rest is a manifestation of the songwriter's disillusionment with America. He's discoursing with the country of his birth. I don't know. Sounds like he's spent a lot of time on shore leave and is jumping between soldiers and prostitutes.

The National – All Dolled-Up in Straps Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this is the kind of lyric which makes me wonder whether I'd like Matt or not. Which isn't important, at all. But the protagonist is self-centred and knows it. Feels sorry for himself and knows it, and has no self esteem at all. I tend to hear very dark undertones of this... the line about looking happy for a woman is misogynistic. Possession, I think, is the key.
