I think this song is about procrastination, and how no matter how many times you tell yourself to do something, it just never gets done. And the judgement you get from others for doing/not doing things when it's not necessarily any of their business. Brilliant catchy song. |

The song was written in loving memory of Eric Roche, an old friend of Newton Faulkner and he is thanking him for getting him to where he is now. Eric Roche died from throat cancer aged 37 in 2005. This song can be applied to any situation where you have lost a loved one. It definitely affects me personally. I love this song. |

I think this song is about depression. But this is just my interpretation. It's the feeling of having memories of someone or knowledge that they care about you. But you feel too far gone to acknowledge their concern. The feeling of being stuck in a situation, in a town, somewhere that has created these bad memories that have left you in this state of depression. When you feel as though you could break at any moment, but at the same time you are too afraid to. So you occupy your mind with alcohol, or something else. You end up saying things you don't mean, maybe even pushing people around you away. Lying awake at night, feeling empty and alone, unable to cry or sleep. But still unable to ignore the feeling. You close your eyes and let your mind drift, it takes you to memories so far back as you try to retrace your footsteps to see 'what went wrong'. But then you remember what it was like to be a child, to be innocent, to have wonder. And you want nothing but to feel that again. You then admit to yourself/another that you are troubled. You think about leaving Earth, but you know that wont change anything. Whether it's pride or sense, you decide against it. It's about making your way through all this, and building yourself through experience, awareness and living in the moment. |

Well, a few lines in those lyrics are wrong. I'm gonna work with what I know and give my personal interpretation of this song :) At first, the song gives off a feeling of an aftermath of some sort, and considering in the first verse 'we both landed somewhere in between' somehow confirms that suspicion. The lines "The more you talk the less it means" seems to be going in the direction of trying to explain to someone that 'sorry' isn't quite enough, that the damage has been done, and she is exhausted. and "While with flesh and blood I still bleed." basically gives hint at the fact that she is singing about someone related to her, I'm going to use 'sister'. (but this could be anyone i.e Father, mother, brother, son, daughter etc.) Then the chorus 'But maybe on the streets of glory', gives a dark surprise of realising that she is singing about someone who has perhaps died, and that one day she may be able to walk with them again, and that she has been 'arguing' with herself on behalf of the sister due to her frustration of her leaving her alone on Earth. They left with no proper goodbye, and she is confused by grief and perhaps the 'sudden' event of her death. The line: "It may hurt to leave but it's worse to hold your hand" explains that she is trying to let go, to overcome it and accept that she is gone, in the hope that she may see her again on the 'streets of glory'. "I will be your memento mori" = A 'Memento Mori' is something you keep/have as a reminder that we are mortal beings, to remind you that you cannot avoid death. I hope this makes a little sense, even if it's 'wrong', I just wanted to share my interpretation. :) |
