I believe that the baby is a metaphor for anything fragile. It could be a relationship in Conor's case, and by "drowning it", he will never be able to forgive himself. As far fetched as it sounds, Peter Silberman of The Antlers wrote an entire album about bone cancer as a metaphor for his broken relationship.... Just a thought. |

Just to make something clear, contrary to popular opinion, I believe that "yellow bird" actually refers to almost a guinea pig or lab rat, considering yellow canaries were used by miners to test cave oxygen levels to see if it was safe for them to enter. If the bird passed out or died, it was unsafe. When he says "you're the yellow bird that I've been waiting for", it means that Conor was having suicidal thoughts, and when his cousin actually went through with it, Conor realized that it wasn't worth it. Conor's cousin had tested the waters, and it was far too cold. |

@taylorsaurus rex I completely agree with you. I like Elliott Smith, but nothing compares to Conor's cover. It's the same deal with M. Ward. This cover is absolutely incredible. The only cover that I believe Conor didn't do a great job of was "Burn Rubber" by Simon Joyner. Simone's version was much better |

@[winabagel:2623] You've got the idea, but I don't think you understand that "the boy" at the end of Amy In The White Coat is her father... Conor's fictional self in the song is a sexually abusive father, thus when he said "I tried to talk to her" he was referring to "I" as the abusive father. He didn't change roles |

For those who found a connection to Amy In the White Coat, I interpret this song as almost an epilogue to Amy in the White Coat, explaining the adulthood of a girl who was emotionally scarred from a childhood of being sexually abused by her father. I see the line "her man's got an angry mouth, once told me to rot in hell" as a way of showing that her dark past has left her with no sense of self-worth, She has found a man who she believes is what she deserves; short tempered, and probably abusive.
"She's laughing an glowing, she's three months and showing, seeing her now makes me want to live." I see this line as Amy finally finding something worth living for, and beginning to forget her past and move on to live a happy, normal life. |
