| Vampire Weekend – Hannah Hunt Lyrics | 12 years ago |

Until I read this thread I had interpreted the tearing up of the NYT positively. I pictured the singer walking off to buy some kindling, while Hannah stays and shreds the newspaper to light the kindling with. I think the two meanings of the line could work together if the song was viewed not to be strictly about a breakup, but about measuring time by the changing dynamics of a relationship. Like a "Phoenix" it dies and is reborn over and over again. The relationship is continually evolving, moving like "crawling vines," and the couple realize that this change is a more adequate measure of the passing of existence than "time." So Hannah is tearing up the "times they had in NY," and also tearing up the actual newspaper so they can light the fire, indicating that they are moving on with the relationship, starting over, relighting the fire. Wow. As I was writing that I think I realized all over again how completely fantastic this song is. |
