The Knife – Ready To Lose Lyrics 11 years ago
I believe this song strikes at the necessity to consider the commonly obscured consequences wrought by industrial capitalism at the reigns of a materialistic & short-sighted, insidious culture. The Western world (the 1% elite) continues to binge and waste while "mouths water" around the world in hunger and suffering.

It stems in a concept of private ownership instantiated in the seizure of the wealth of the land and nature of the American continents and the entire planet. Prior to Industrialization, Native Americans understood the land to be a public good, for the benefit of all, to be lived with, not owned. As it is parceled now, corporations and profit-motivated governments distribute wealth and goods without any thought for the common well-being.

At the end of a great chain of the succession of ownerships, our culture can't imagine an alternative. Those born rich believe they deserve their inheritance, and those born poor often believe the same. This song labels the only way out as "losing". This can be seen as an inevitable consequence of continuing environmental and social degradation (apocalypse), or it can also be seen as an opportunity for new growth. If we admit that we lost the original game we set up for ourselves (to conquer the planet), can we start a new game with stronger ideals of interdependent communities and equality? Ultimately, we must subsist in a more humble economy...
