Ace of Base – Living In Danger Lyrics 11 years ago
guys seriously, did you listen to the lyrics? It certainly is notsaying "it's good to live in danger"... quite the opposite...

Listen to the lyrics:
"Expectations, so high noone can reach" - "We never get enough" It's about high expecatation and strong ambition ---> It's about the feeling of beeing in competition with everybody else.
It's driving us to see other people as enemies before we even know them --> "I see lies in the eyes of a stranger". Paranoid out of fear.

The message is a real as it was the time the song appearded and it's quite an important one... don't turn this into "be yourself" - because that can be an empty message...

That's about it, i think it's rather obvious.

Wir Sind Helden – Müssen nur wollen Lyrics 11 years ago
Holofernes may not say it in order to not upset people, but i'm rather sure this is very ambivalent towards "working yourself up".

It's about the way we're always told "you can do it if you want it" while at the same time we are obligated to only want certain things. The way every-time we fail, all responsibility is pointed towards us: "You didn't try hard enough".

"You can achieve everything if you try hard enough" may be motivating at first glance. It becomes downright depressing if you fail often enough.

The way we are supposed to "always give our best at everything". We are so focused on "getting ahead", that we don't have time to think about what we really want. And end up with an I-pod.
Everything becomes a chore if your always busy thinking "i can do better". Even things you're good at and love to do.

I think this song is wonderful, because it brings up an important issue without lecturing people: In the process of optimizing ourselves, even relaxing, leisure becomes an obligation - poking your nose suddenly needs to be efficient.

I am personally convinced this is the major cause of the decreasing mental-health. We loose our humanity, our talent, our intellect, if we keep exploiting ourselves.

Yeah, maybe you can "work your way up" and become bitter through the hardship and cynical towards everybody who didn't make it. But do you want that? Isn't there a better way to change things?

Wir Sind Helden – Denkmal Lyrics 11 years ago
I'm pretty sure its about how things start feeling like an obligation when people begin to have a certain view of "the way you are suppsed to be".

For example within love: Instead of the feelings for each other, there's suddely an odd obligation to be together, because people expect that you to be in love. The "belonging together" just overwrites that you acutally "want" to be together. Through that it suddenly gets hard to actually want it.
It's sort of what you'd call reactance in sociological terms. If you feel like being forced to do something, the most beautiful things suddenly seem annoying and wrong.

I imagine the same things can happen with fame, which might be what this song is about. People have a picture of you, that may or may not be realistic, negative or positive - but the expectations sort of make you feel trapped and obligated, wich is harmful to art.

It can happen through a real symbol like in marriage or it might just be the expectance of friends.
