I think it's not a break-up song at all. In fact, I see it as a song about finding a new love after a break-up with an old flame. I think the verse everyone is getting wrong is the first verse. It should read like this: I live on a chain. And you share the same last name... as a joke. I sent a bottle of whiskey. As you choked, you said it made you feel dirty. To me - this is indicating that both of them were in relationships. But, they must've known each other. I think the remainder of the story is about him eventually being freed from the existing relationship and falling in love with the new girl. The killed in half a day, means he was right back in another relationship after the previous one (time alone is good... I was killed in half a day). |

This song is about leaving his love aside while going on tour and dealing with temptation along the way. I find a lot of Vitalogy is about that actually. I mean the organ left bloodied on the shore is his heart. His fame is what is drowning his savior (the woman) as she's gets tossed aside. She's upset with the circumstances and he's confused because he's not sure he's successful because of fate or chance. The chorus (the little secrets part) is about him being away and trying to decipher whether small lies are telling a deeper story in their relationship. Lies start small, but can't destroy the entirety. The second verse - randsom paid the devil is clearly about temptation. I think the bridge portion of the song (I'll decide... take the dive... etc) is about him coming to the realization that he can't control her or the situation. He can only control his own actions. The last part of the song (turns the bow back..) has two possible meanings to me: 1) He decides to look elsewhere for a relationship (hence the drops the line). I'm not sold on this because I know he married Beth well after this record. But, perhaps they were having issues for a while. 2) He decides to keep the faith in the relationship (hence the Christ analogy) and not worry about what's out of his control or even pry into anything because it could explode. Instead, he finds santuary elsewhere - fishing which is probably just a metaphor used because of the first few lines and the obvious word interplay with old man and the sea. |

| Keane – Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
I once knew a girl. We dated for a long time in college and for years afterwards. During college, we had a special place. We called it our tree. We would kiss good night at the tree or meet at the tree. It was our landmark and no one else knew about it as such. So, when I was going to get engaged to her I heard this song and the lyrics just stood out "somewhere only we know". Ironically, I thought about the appropriateness of the song in regards to our relationship. With the reference to the fallen tree, was it a song about love? Or was it a song about dissolving a relationship? At the time, I came to the conclusion it was about a decision. So, maybe love, but a decision on where to go from there and a place to talk about it. So, I bought a ring, the CD and planned the engagement. I brought her to the tree making a good excuse for why we had to go in that direction to meet someone (I was then working at the college so it made sense), who of course wasn't coming. Before we got out of the car, I played the song and asked her whether she felt there was anything around here that the song made her think about (think there's our tree right there, she'll say that). She did not, she was confused. We got out, I proposed, she said yes right under our tree. Years after college we were back where we started, it was fitting. But, just like the song, the lack of clarity still felt uneasy. Months later we split. I now hear this song and think of it completely differently. To me, this song is now 100% a break-up song. And, in retrospect, I'm so happy I picked it for that event. I'm so glad I played it for that event. I stopped playing the song after the event for a year or so because I couldn't help but associate it with that. But, eventually I heard it on the radio again and my perspective changed. I really listened again. It hit me - this is a breakup song. It was like the best forshadowing to events that transpired, and the best part was I was realizing post-event. I knew the pathway like the back of my hand (sure, I knew that area from college and the girl), but I came across a fallen tree (but, it had changed). Our tree had fallen. And now, happily married to a much better person for me, I'm so glad that lyrical tree fell down. Funny how a song can become so intertwined with such a pivotal event in one's life. And how year's later it can be completely reinterpreted. |

| Pearl Jam – Lightning Bolt Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Nah, it's about writing songs. Ed basically said that was the case when he was interviewed in the lead up the album. Songwriting sometimes hits you like a lightning bolt. I think this song is about that and the issues that come with it. About focusing on so much on certain issues, while others grow around you. Hence, you have the dynamic relationship described in the song where the lightning bolt is somehow destroying the person that loves it. That sort of thing.... It's actually a pretty great lyrical song, if this interp is correct. |

| Family of the Year – Hero Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Some songs just hit you. I'm a lyric driven guy, but do attach to melodies. So, it's complicated to describe, but sometimes they just fit. This song has that. To me - this song actually has a military theme. I think the song is basically about a kid who is serving his country, but doesn't want to credit. He's a real hero. I'll break down the lyrics: Let me go I don't wanna be your hero I don't wanna be a big man Just wanna fight like everyone else (here I just think he's saying he wants to go fight) Your masquerade I don't wanna be a part of your parade (I'm thinking this line has to do with military parades) Everyone deserves a chance to Walk with everyone else (the hero acknowledges that everyone should be in the parade, no just him) While holding down A job to keep my girl around And maybe buy me some new strings And her and I out on the weekends (This is about the economy) And we can whisper things Secrets from my America dreams (this line is about dreaming...) Baby needs some protection (...and providing for loved ones...) But I'm a kid like everyone else (...while keeping your real dreams alive) So let me go I don't wanna be your hero I don't wanna be a big man Just wanna fight with everyone else (I think this chorus reinforces that the hero wants to enlist) Ooh Ooh |
